Making a choice about where you will live during your retirement is arguably one of the most important decisions you will make in your life. There are many factors to consider when picking a retirement community. Will you feel comfortable with your neighbors? Will your new home offer you amenities that suit your lifestyle? Will you like the food?

Sedgebrook, a retirement community in Lincolnshire, gives prospective residents a chance to get to know the community firsthand when they join the priority list.

Priority list members are invited to special events like on-site parties and social outings with current residents, according to Retirement Counselor Tracy Dellaria. She says the events give people considering a move to Sedgebrook a good opportunity to assess how they feel about the community by talking to people who live there, eating the food served in the restaurants, and spending time in model apartment homes and common areas.

“Joining the priority list gives them a chance to get to know us on their terms while keeping their options open,” Dellaria says. “They can meet some of our residents along with other priority list members so they can get to know people before they move.”

Priority list members also get first dibs on the apartment home of their choice when they decide to move to Sedgebrook, Dellaria says. The date a future resident joins the priority list determines his or her place in the waiting line for the most popular apartment homes.

“If they join sooner rather than later, they could be a whole year ahead of  everybody else, which will really matter when they’re ready to select an apartment,” Dellaria says.

She says priority list members also receive other perks like access to  information before it is made available to the public and the opportunity to become patients of Sedgebrook’s on-site physician, Dr. Elliott Kroger.

Charles Benedetti and his wife Mary heeded Dellaria’s advice and joined the priority list a year and a half ago.

“Just about everybody we talked to raved about the place,” Mr. Benedetti says. “They said they should have come sooner, and to wait any longer is a mistake.”

The Benedettis currently live in a condominium in Evanston, but they would like to move to a community  like Sedgebrook soon. They decided to join the priority list so they could get the information they need to make the right decision about their retirement.

“When we signed up, our reason was to be prepared for our future,” he says. In the meantime, the Benedettis are taking advantage of the perks of being on the priority list. The couple recently attended a block party at Sedgebrook, where they had opportunities to get to know current residents in a relaxed environment, as well as ask the staff questions.

Mr. Benedetti even used his priority list status to make a good decision about his health. He needed a new doctor and was able to make an appointment with Sedgebrook’s Dr. Kroger, who sees only residents and priority list members.

“I had a nice chat with Dr. Kroger [at the last priority list event], and I made an appointment to see him,” Mr. Benedetti says. “I thought I may as well check on this doctor because I had heard so many good things about him.”

Don’t miss your chance
Dellaria says Sedgebrook already has a large number of future residents on the priority list, and she encourages people interested in the community to join so they can ensure the home they want will be available when they are ready to move. In fact, Dellaria says that if everyone who is currently on the priority list wanted to move to Sedgebrook now, the community would not have enough available apartment homes.

“The longer they wait, the longer they’re letting people get in front of them,” she says.
