“The sky is the limit” often comes to mind when thinking of Fox Run.

Currently the retirement community boasts more than 100 clubs and groups for its residents to join, ranging from jazzercise to fine arts to travel and several free courses on campus.

Recently, thanks to resident Hilda Edwards, yet another free class has become available: Digital photography.

Edwards has been using digital cameras for the past eight years.

“I like the instant results they give you,” she says. “Plus, you can take a bunch of pictures and just keep the good ones.”

Experienced instructor
Edwards is no novice to digital photgraphy. She taught a similar course at a senior center in Ohio for many years and is eager to share her talents with her neighbors at Fox Run.

Her class is being offered in weekly sessions and has sparked some positive interest among her neighbors.

Owning a digital camera is a prerequisite for the class. “I have an Olympus digital camera,” Edwards says. “Everybody in the group has a better camera than I do, although it’s not necessary to have a lot of megapixels—sometimes too many can take up too much memory [on your computer].”

At the group’s first meeting, Edwards gave a PowerPoint presentation and went through all the various parts of digital cameras. Participants could try each feature on their own cameras while watching Edwards’ demonstration.

In another session, the class met in the community’s computer room so Edwards could teach them how to upload their pictures and where to store them.

“I try to keep it simple. I make sure everyone understands the basic concepts,” she says. During each class, Edwards gives each person individual attention and instructions as needed.

In one class, she had her students take pictures of each other for practice. “Some had taken pictures before. I showed them what makes a picture good and how to focus,” Edwards says. “One thing about digital cameras is that they can easily be used on automatic versus specific settings.”

Edwards e-mails some of the class’ pictures to those who have computers in their homes—those who don’t can always use the ones in the computer room at Fox Run, which is open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

Edwards says response to the class has been extremely positive so far.

“It’s amazing. Everybody who has attended the class has stopped and told me how much they enjoyed it,” she says.

Starting a new class is easy at Fox Run
According to Edwards, getting the new class off the ground wasn’t difficult.

“I talked to [Senior Community Services Manager] Andrea Peragine about the class,” Edwards says. “We set up a date and time; she advertised it and  provided sign-up sheets.

“There’s a lot to join here,” she says. “There aren’t enough hours in the day to do everything you want to do.”

Besides running the class, Edwards also participates in Center for Continuous Learning seminars featuring guest speakers, water aerobics classes, jazzercise, line dancing, the Village Travelers, and the book club.

“I’ve lived here for seven months, and I cannot say enough positive things about living at Fox Run,” she says.
