Have you ever heard the saying “Don’t Mind Silly Boys”? Maybe from your mom regarding a classmate in elementary school or from a beloved math teacher who wanted you to remember the steps of long division—Divide, Multiply, Subtract, and Bring down.

Seabrook resident Eugene Lovette, a former math teacher in Hicksville, Long Island, is back in the classroom sharing his love of numbers with a variety of employees who want to sharpen their basic math skills and then graduate to an advanced level of study.

Making sense of math
“Math is the greatest cause of grief for many students to drop out of high school and college,” Lovette says. “Basic math functions are essential in all health care occupations, and employees need to be familiar with whole numbers, fractions, and calculators to get them through the day. If I can contribute just a little bit of my time to help them understand the science of numbers so they can achieve their professional pursuits, then I am a happy man.”

Lovette tutors wait staff employees, utility workers, administrative staff, rehab technicians, service coaches, and housekeeping members who get together once a week for a two-hour class in conjunction with the “Building a Career Ladderin Health Care” module administered by Seabrook Human Resource Manager Suzanne McBean. “We are always trying to bridge the gap between staff and residents, and Gene’s math mentoring program enables us to do just that,” McBean says. “When we are able to share our gifts on a daily basis, it just validates our mission statement,” which is “building communities that celebrate life.”

Daily use
Two modules of the self-study “School at Work” program combine DVD and online activities that focus on math. Lovette is on hand to interpret and clarify the instructor who presents the material in a friendly manner.

“I feel so much better after taking this class,” says Dining Services Supervisor  Tim Stenger. “It’s a great  refresher course, and I need and use math on a daily basis for my job. Your brain is like a muscle, and you have to exercise it every day—you have to challenge yourself. I’m glad Gene is here to help us along the way.”

Lovette says employees need basic math and calculator skills in the workplace to tackle timesheets, measurements, purchase orders, and budgets. Typical uses of decimals and percentages in the workplace deal with the metric system, medical charts, and medication solutions and dosages. “Today’s math is entirely different from the 1940s,” he says. “We didn’t have the graphing calculator back then, and it pretty much eliminated long-hand math and revolutionized the way the subject is presented.”

The discipline to complete homework assignments, arrive to class on time, prepare “to do” lists, and prioritize time has given Outpatient Rehab Technician Brenda Whittaker the confidence to tackle centigrade to Fahrenheit conversions. “Math was one of my favorite subjects in school,  but I should have paid more attention in class,” she says. “I love the one-on-one instruction with Gene—it helps me tackle bill paying and percentage-off sales in the stores, and it’s just plain fun. You are never too old to learn.”

Lovette smiles and knows he has to stay one step ahead of his students— that’s why he is sharpening his pencils and preparing for his advanced calculus class at Brookdale Community College that starts this month. “From a math perspective, it all adds up,” Lovette says. “We all have a common denominator—we want to help each other here at Seabrook, and it’s just one of the reasons why I call this place home!”
