This year television programming brought viewers face-to-face with a well-publicized writers strike and the advent of increasingly sensationalistic “reality TV.” Despite the drama, the producers of Greenspring’s cable channel 6 remained committed to producing and airing quality television for its audience.
As a result, four of Greenspring’s most outstanding productions were honored with bronze Telly Awards for superior video production.
“This station could not be run without our residents,” says Diane Havinga, director and producer at channel 6. “They are an integral part of what we do and why we are able to win these awards.”
What is a Telly Award?
Founded in 1978, the Telly Awards are the premier honor for outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions. The Telly Awards are widely known as a highly respected national and international competition that receives more than 14,000 entries annually from all 50 states and many foreign countries.
“Receiving a Telly Award is a great honor,” says Havinga. “It puts us on the same professional level as CBS, NBC, and ABC, and that becomes a catalyst for our volunteers to continue to expand their horizons.”
The winners
This year’s winning video entries included “Poems and Portraits of Black Artists,” produced by community members Mabel Thornton and Mary McDonnell; “A Special Trip: National Aquarium,” produced by Havinga; “Holiday Music Gift 07,” produced by Havinga, and “History of the Women’s Rights Movement,” produced by former channel 6 Producer/Director Kim Condit.
Winning a Telly for the only program produced solely by community members, Thornton and McDonnell are both very proud of their accomplishment. “Both of us have been working together since I moved here in 2004,” says Thornton. | |

“We started by producing a program for black history month in 2005. When putting together ‘Poems and Portraits of Black Artists,’ we wanted to carefully look at how so many African-Americans have achieved so much. It’s difficult to find these stories in the history books, and I think it is very important to share these stories.”
Their program looks specifically at African-American women such as Alice Walker, Barbara Jordan, and Cicely Tyson.
“What I am most proud of is the fact that people watching our program who didn’t know these things can be inspired and want to learn more,” says Thornton.
Proud tradition
This is not the first time Greenspring has been honored with the distinguished Telly. For the last four years, the cable television station has received a total of 16 awards, including two silver Tellys in 2005 for “Women Inspiring Hope and Possibility” and “Remembrance D-Day: 60 Years.” Both programs highlight the stories and memories of Greenspring community members.
“The quality of channel 6 programming is topnotch, and it’s a great feeling to have that recognized,” says Greenspring Executive Director Will Nance. “In fact, channel 6 has received Telly Awards four years in a row. I think that speaks volumes about how hard Greenspring residents and channel 6 staff work to constantly improve their already fantastic work. Everyone here is extremely proud.”
“What is so exciting about being recognized for a Telly is the pride our residents have about these programs and channel 6,” says Havinga.
Looking toward the future Not willing to rest on their laurels, Greenspring’s channel 6 team—both community members and staff— are hard at work developing, producing, and filming new television programs every day. “We continually strive to produce quality programming,” Havinga says.
With a bright future awaiting this award-winning team, the entire Greenspring community is guaranteed to enjoy exceptional new TV specials worthy of sharing honors with industry giants like ABC, CBS, and NBC.
