THE ERICKSON TRIBUNE

Overflowing landfills, concerns over global warming, and skyrocketing fuel prices have led everyone to a greater awareness of the planet’s resources these days.

To continue to do its part to make a positive impact, Erickson’s dining services team recently got a little greener when it partnered with paper products company SCA Tissue North America—which the British newspaper The Independent named the second most environmentally friendly company in the entire world.

Sharing the same ideal
“We are constantly evaluating our current practices and always looking for new ways to be more environmentally friendly,” says Larry Ross, Erickson’s director of facility maintenance and engineering. “It’s something we take pride in.”

So when the company began shopping for a new paper goods supplier, SCA caught Erickson’s attention. SCA is a global consumer goods and paper  company that develops, produces, and markets personal care products, tissue, packaging solutions, and solid-wood products. Erickson started its partnership with SCA in July 2007; by the end of the year, all 18 Erickson communities around the nation had converted to SCA products.

More than just a green product
In addition to the company’s green products, how the company produces and delivers its products is also environmentally responsible, including smarter, regional shipping methods. SCA also offers a recycling program for shipping pallets.

“We believe that taking care of the environment is part of our commitment to  sustainable development,” says Joe Raccuia, president of SCA Tissue. “Environmental stewardship isn’t a marketing platform at SCA Tissue. It’s an integral part of our strategic plan for continued success.”

‘The big picture of green’
Erickson communities already employ a number of other environmentally friendly methods, including holding campus-wide fluorescent bulb exchanges, preserving environmentally fragile areas on campuses, and using unique heat transfer systems instead of running energy-sucking air conditioners and furnaces. But the changeover to a new paper product line was an easy decision.

Kevin Glover, senior vice president of development services for Erickson, says that SCA’s environmentally friendly products fit well with other efforts the  communities are making to be less of a burden on the environment.

“Smart growth is green,” Glover explains. “And good design is green. And I think with all of our efforts, including this one, we’re really the big picture of green. Sometimes it costs more to do things the right way and often it doesn’t. But you have to make a commitment to it in everything you do.”

Good product, good deal
SCA now provides Erickson communities with paper towels in the kitchen and with white dinner and cocktail napkins for the community restaurants and lounges. Some communities also use SCA toilet and tissue paper products.

Lori Buik, assistant director of procurement for food services at Erickson, says that SCA’s product quality is up to Erickson’s standards and the pricing is much more competitive than other companies. “The fact that SCA’s products are green is just a great feature and benefit,” she says.
