THE ERICKSON TRIBUNE

The National Investment Center (NIC), a national company that researches and tracks the senior housing market, has awarded its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award to John Erickson, founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Erickson Retirement Communities which is headquartered in Catonsville, Md.

Erickson won the award for his efficient and trusted business model, his  philanthropic work, and his overall dedication to improving aging and aging services in America.

A common goal
The award was renamed this year in honor of the much respected William E. Colson, former president and CEO of Holiday Retirement Corp. and the first award recipient. He passed away from cancer earlier this year.

“It’s appropriate that this award, named in honor of Bill, should be presented to John Erickson,” said Robert G. Kramer, president of NIC. “Both men have a lot in common. They are icons of the seniors housing and care industry. They are known philanthropists. And both are visionaries who have created models of housing and care that were innovative for their time and helped to transform the industry into what it is today.”

A place to call home
Erickson, a self-described “serial entrepreneur,” started Erickson Retirement Communities in 1982 with Charleston Village, just outside of Baltimore.  Erickson revolutionized retirement housing and care with an attractive and affordable campus concept specifically targeting middle-income retirees. The model also offers top notch health care options and has since become the gold standard for community operators seeking to lower costs and improve quality, the NIC says.

Other endeavors
But that was only the start for Erickson. In 2004, he began The Erickson Tribune, a free monthly print and now also an online newspaper read by five million people. That was followed in the fall of 2005 with the creation of  Retirement Living, a TV station run in partnership with AARP and Comcast.

About the same time, he gave $5 million as a founding gift to start the Erickson School, located at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County campus, which offers undergraduate, graduate, masters, doctoral, and executive  development programs in aging care. “In the end all of those things are connected, and it’s really just about changing the negative views on aging and making life better for everyone. It’s as simple as that,” Erickson says.

The big picture
Looking to the future, Erickson also recently renovated an old boy scout camp at the headwaters of the Chesapeake Bay and offers character education and state public school curriculum to Baltimore’s inner city youth.

The creation of The Erickson Foundation, a charitable trust, ties it all together. It supports projects that promote successful aging, the training and education of disadvantaged youth, aging research, and higher education initiatives. “Most would have stopped after they were ahead,” Dan Rexford executive vice president for Erickson Retirement Communities says, “But John has tremendous vision and a great heart.”

Continuing the tradition
In recognition of Erickson’s efforts and contributions to the industry, the NIC Board of Directors and the Colson family donated $100,000 each to the  Erickson School.

Humbled by the awards and gifts, Erickson thanks his employees “for making us look good and expertly delivering our product,” and the 20,000-some  residents “who have chosen to be part of our communities.”
