There Is a Heart Fitness Program for You

Don’t Let Other Health Problems Deter You

“Everyone, no matter what their health, can benefit from exercise. It not only improves your cardiovascular system, it improves your quality of sleep, keeps you from becoming dependent on others, and fights depression,” says Vrinda Suneja, M.D., Erickson HealthSM medical director of Fox Run, a community in Michigan built and managed by Erickson.

Cardiovascular exercises are an essential part of any good exercise program. Your cardiovascular system consists of your heart, lungs, and blood vessels, bringing oxygen and nutrients to your blood and pumping cell wastes out.

Setting Up a Routine
All Erickson-built and-managed communities have an on-site Fitness Center, all of which meet the standards set by the International Council on Active Aging. Here at Greenspring, a Virginia-based Erickson built and-managed community, we average 100 residents daily in the Fitness Center. Most of our members prefer a three day a week regimen (usually Monday, Wednesday, and Friday). We design a routine that incorporates three elements: cardiovascular workout, resistance training, and stretching.

Cardiac exercises can be done daily (as long as you have gotten your doctor’s okay). Resistance exercises that work your muscles, should only be done on alternate days. Your muscles need to rest. How long you devote to each element is something you should discuss with both your physician and whoever is monitoring your fitness program.

Avoid Boredom
Aerobic exercises, swimming, walking, and bicycling are just a few cardiovascular exercises. Within these areas are numerous variations.

Consider general aerobic exercises like jump rope, tennis, even ballroom dancing. “If a resident has arthritis, I might recommend they join the aqua aerobics team in the all-season pool at Fox Run,” says Suneja.

Indoor walking allows you to maintain a routine year-round. You might find a mall walking group in your area. Communities built and managed by Erickson all have climatecontrolled walkways, so walking to the Fitness Center can be the warmup for a resident’s exercise routine.

The treadmill is a popular walking tool and water walking is great for your muscles and cardiovascular system.

Equipment Advancements
Bicycling is another great cardiac workout. Here at Greenspring we not only have the standard stationary bike, we have the NuStep recumbent bike.

Recumbent bikes are designed so you are at a 90- degree angle with your seat at the bottom of the slope and your legs above you. It is great for people with bad knees (among other things) because it takes the stress off the lower extremities.

The NuStep goes a step further. We can set the resistance so low that even someone who has literally just come from hip or knee surgery can use it and still get their cardiac benefits.

Greenspring also has an egometer. You sit behind it, grasp a handle on either side, and start turning them. It is used to build upper body strength, improve range of motion, and provide an excellent cardiac workout. It can even be used by people in wheelchairs; we just move the device’s seat and roll the wheelchair into place.

Get Your Doctor’s Okay
NuStep bikes, egometers, and aqua aerobics are just some examples Suneja means when she says just about everyone can find a cardiac exercise. The key is finding a doctor and a fitness center that work together to gauge your strength level, help you choose the right exercise(s), monitor your progress and adjust your routine.

In communities built and managed by Erickson, the Fitness Center insists the individual have a physician’s permission before starting a routine. We give you a form to take to your physician. If you are a patient at the onsite Medical Center, your Erickson HealthSM physician can access and complete the form through our Centricity electronic medical records system.

Wherever you live, whatever your physical limitations, have a physical exam. Then find a fitness center and exercise program that can get you on the road to better heart health.
