| How do you feel about the possibility of receiving federal funding, as seniors, at the expense of funding for children? Would you rather the children receive the funding or do you take a better-me-than-them stance to the situation? |

We think it is absolutely ridiculous that an article comparing Federal funding for seniors at the expense of kids would even be thought of. We bring our children into the world to be responsible for financing them and give them every opportunity. Seniors are those parents who have been responsible for their children and paid in FICA all their working days to finance their parents Social Security. When it comes their turn for Social Security income, it is very unfair to make them feel like they are taking it from children who have their parents. Seniors have no parents to finance them. It is a very unfair comparison in our estimation. John and Juanita Maggard |

| I am SICK and TIRED of hearing about "the children". They have contributed NOTHING. All they do is TAKE. Isn't it enough that they receive free educations? The seniors have paid into social security and medicare for YEARS. They are ENTITLED to the benefits. The kids haven't paid into anything. It's about time they stop holding their hands out and start earning their keep. |

| Not surprised to read this usual type of articles by Erickson, a for profit organization just as we are drowning in a health care system that is just interested in profit. Am 85 and have paid from the beginning as I was aware of many millionares receiving social security. You are just like the rest of the right wing that would like to take our benifits away or give less for your youngsters who we have paid for all their live. In addition to school expenses was available for help until they could be on their own. You are just right wing republicans and we will continue to get good representatives. |

| to pit one generation against another is outragious. Seniors are not taking funds away from children. The media is creating a problem where none should exist. For the media to ask such a question is just plain crazy. |

I think this is an outrageous and offensive attack on SENIORS. They have earned everything they have put in the system. I just hope someone is monitoring how much of the SOCIAL SECURITY money is going to illegals and affluent people in this country. This is where it is being abused. I guess Seniors are just an easy target. Where is the respect?

| We worked so our parents could have social security and we worked so our children could have an education. Now it is our turn, so why should we feel guilty about taking the money we put into the system. Perhaps if we did less spending on unnecessary wars (like the one in Iraq) we would have enough funds. Seniors are not all wealthy, and we need our social security and medicare to help us just get by. |

| My above reply was actually in respone to buckykc@aol.com.
I see the article as inaccurate and strongly biased - the type that could encorage intergenerational warfare as noted elsewhere.
Reason I say this? the proportin of kids to seniors in the 60's is way different than it is today. A case of misleading figures. Very poor reporting. How much was really spent on each kid in the sixties vrs.
each senior, and what is the real change in 2007? Publish that and I may believe something other than a reporter's statistics were wrong. |

Can't believe the article on seniors and children. Couldn't believe it, children in my state get all kinds of help. My property taxes go for schools and children services. What happened to parents, I took care of my children myself. I'm 72 and still work for my son and pay thousands in income tax. If I didn't still work they wouldn't get all that revenue. I've worked and paid in a lot of years. That article has no basis!!!! |

I am writing regarding the article "Subject: Federal funding for seniors at the expense of kids?" I have one huge problem with this issue and the author spells it out, quite clearly, when he writes, "We'll have to eliminate every program in the Federal budget except defense to pay for seniors." Hello! Is anyone listening?
In the last 7 years military spending has almost doubled to over half a TRILLION dollars a year. Before that it was already at astronomical levels of $296 billion a year. According to the National Priorities Project in Washington D.C. military spending now makes up at LEAST 40% of the taxes we pay. Additionally 22% of the taxes we pay goes to paying off just the INTEREST on the national debt. This debt was largely created (by at least 80%) through, you guessed it, irresponsible military and weapons spending! This is rediculous especially when the military does us no good whatsoever and in fact endangers us. You heard that right. I am a foreign policy analyst and I'll tell you the military has cost Americans more hardship than they have helped. Pearl Harbor was attacked because our military was engaging in a hostile oil embargo of Japan. If we are to believe the official story of 9/11 it happened BECAUSE of our military presence in the middle east not despite it! The CIA has been saying this for a long time now. Our military presence in other nations INCREASES the threat of terrorist attacks against Americans by supercharging (CIA words) terrorist recruiting and increasing hate and animosity against Americans. Because of this ILLEGAL and phony "endless war against terror" Americans are more hated and are more of a target than ever.
Iraq is a failure because the Bush administration REFUSED to listen to the experts. They ignored the weapons inspectors, they ignored the CIA and twisted their findings, they ignored the foreign policy analysts and they ignored the international community. What's more, the Iraq war, and other wars in the past 50 years has proven that war is now obselete. You heard that right. For whatever reasons the Bush administration is feeding us it is failing in its objectives besides one: keeping the flow of oil coming out of Iraq down to a trickle to keep the price of oil on world markets high so the Bush cabal and Saudis can profit more.
Before 9/11/2001 congress was pressuring the administration to increase security because of the terrorist threat. Did they listen? No, they were busy making plans to pull out of the ICBM treaty and building more bombs.
I'll repeat this again. The wasting of our taxes on military spending is ENDANGERING our lives and our freedom. It is because of military spending which bankrupt the Soviet Union and sent the people of the former republics into abject poverty. Many in developed nations joke that the US is the "richest third world nation on earth." Other nations enjoy a higher standard of living than we do yet unlike the GOP would have us believe, to keep the pockets of their weapons contractors full, "that they hate us because they are jealous" they are under very little threat from terrorism. We are the only developed nation left without national health care.
The government knows darn well how to stop terrorism and that is not to provoke it in the first place. We are becoming just
like the Soviet Union and if we do not cut military spending to pay for
our seniors and kids we are going to go the way of the Soviet Union.
There needs to come a time when we have ask ourselves are we Christians or are we killers? We can not be both. "Defense", or rather offense, spending needs to be cut down by two thirds and tonly then we can deal with the problems our nation is facing we need to stop killing other peoples and interfering in their soveriegnty.
I'll leave you with an excerpt from President Eisenhhower's "Cross of Iron" speech which speaks ever more truth today as it did back then. "Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children... This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron."

| Richard, I see this article as typical Republican conservative distortion. It perpetuates the myth that the military needs to be sustained at all costs, barely mentions the issue and suggests we need to cut all spending in all other issues and completely ignores the irresponsible and wonton spending upon military. Very right wing. |

See http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=5307 for a breakdown of where your taxes go and how much is being spent on what. Except for the waste spent on our broken health care system which isn't even benefiting us all other expenditures pale in comparison to the military and national debt. | In my grandmother's day the families of elderly senior citizens had to take in the elderly because the elderly had no social security.
The younger people would really be in a bind to have to take in the elderly relatives.
Some are forgetting that by law in most states the children are responsible for their parents if they cannot financially take care of themselves.
If that law has been abolished at this time, believe me, it will be resurrected if the government has a huge amount of elderly coming onto welfare rolls.
Whoever is starting this (media) may find themselves behind the eight ball and have to look at themselves in the mirror when their finances are a wee bit smaller while they pay more for the welfare of kiddies and older people who had their social security taken away.

| Mark, nothing in the article says the money spent on seniors should go to the military. I really don't see how you got that. Right wing? Hardly! What I do know is this, the folks on either end of the political spectrum only hear what they want to hear. Everything gets badly slanted by an extreme view. My reaction suggesting the article was a left wing bias was due to what buckykc@aol.com said. He provided no logical explanation, so I stated how I see it. You stated how you see it, and that is probably fair enough. One thing I will continue to say though is the article uses faulted arguments, namely the comparison of spending on kids to seniors in the 60's versus kids to seniors today. That is faulted because there is a greater proportion of seniors to kids today, and the article does not mention that. It also never mentions the military, so that was quite a jump. |

| I known for a fact, Ms Joanna you are right. So why is this? Why does'nt so many people known about this? Look in the state and Federal policy on it ( on line)! They re ceive a deduction for being Illegal and a write off for that surgery day or child birth(meaning the state/gov. pays for it and this come from the tax payers). |
