I have not purchased a computer from Dell online but for the purchase of any computer the first step is for the customer to tell the company providing the computer what you want to do with it. For example, I want to load lots of pictures on my computer to create scrapbooks for hobby or maybe this is my part time business. This will let them know that a large hard drive 40 gigs + will be needed. It will also let them know a fast processing speed is needed to find your info fast (memory).
