What are your thoughts on Jeff Watson's column this month?  Do you have any stories similar to the ones that he shared?

My father was in the 88th Blue Devil Division and was wounded on Mt Battaglia in Italy. He is a decorated war hero.I would be interested in having an email or being able to contact Jeff Watson regarding his Dad being in the 88th.My mom showed me the article and was very moved by it. Would like to find out what division he was in. If could get contact info would appreciate it.

I was appalled by the column, entitled "Reconciling Love," on Columbine victim Cassie Bernall. When asked, by a deranged individual with a gun to her head, if she believed in God, she should have said, loud and clear, "NO!" if that was what it would have taken to have saved her life. Does anyone truly believe that God requires people to sacrifice their lives to madmen, who demand such answers? Those Jews who escaped from Nazi Europe by pretending to be Gentiles, Christians -- did they do wrong? Did they betray their faith? Or did save their God-given life in the face of a murderous lunatic? God loves life, and doesn't need our martyrdom to satisfy some Divine Ego. Rather, God is our divine parent who, like any parent, first and foremost, wants life and happiness for his children. I envision God, at the time of the shooting, leaning from the heavens, shouting: "Say no!! I know what's in your heart! Save yourself! Save your parents' grief! It's not about Me. It's about my love for you! Choose life, that you may live!" Unfortunately, someone or some group, had gotten ahold of Cassie and convinced her of a very different God, one like some adolescent boyfriend -- always looking jealously around every corner, insisting that nothing, not even life itself, was worth more than his fragile satisfaction. I am the Director of Religious Life and Chaplain at Nichols College, Dudley, MA, and whenever the subject of school shootings comes up (as it did last year with VA Tech), I advise -- I implore -- my students to believe in the God who loves them more than Himself, who doesn't expect them to sacrifice themselves to the whim of the deranged. I tell them that if, God forbid, a mentally ill individual with a weapon asks them if they believe in God, say, "NO!" -- or answer in any way they think will save their lives. I'm positive God would cheer. Wayne-Daniel Berard, Ph. D. Director of Spiritual Life and Chaplain Nichols College Dudley, MA 01572 508-213-2121
