The answers by Dr. Alexis to the good question:  "I am 67 years old.  Is it okay for me to have a glass of wine with dinner?"  are unresponsive, overly cautious, and frankly a bunch of platitudes.  I refer you all to the March 2008 issue of JAMA which says:  "People in their mid-40s and mid-60s who decide to take up moderate drinking, even after a lifetime of abstention, are likely to have healthier hearts when compared to lifelong nondrinkers...In addition those who choose wine as their primary alcoholic beverage were less likely to experience cardovascular troubles such as heart attack or coronary heart disease than beer or spirits drinkers".
Over the past 50 years hundreds of scientific studies have clearly demonstrated that folks who regularly drink a daily potion of wine in moderate amounts outlive those who abstain or who over consume, becasue these people experience less chance of heart disease as well as a lower risk of stroke among a host of other common health hazards.  Why Dr. Alexis would fail to refer to these studies is a puzzlement.  Is she afraid the 67 year old inquirer is about to embark on a regimen of "Dom Rum" brought on by drinking a four ounce glass of wine on a daily basis?  Pulease give us all a break here and start showing good folks the benefits of a moderate wine regime regardless of point of origin.  I of course am not suggesting that people who religious scruples prevent them from consuming alcohol.  To each his/her own.  Regards and cheers.  Ron Drinkhouse (ronoct9@aol.com)
