I like CSI and 24, but I think with all the reality programming lately there is definitely something lacking.

TV does not help a child interact-communicate-or learn to amuse him/her/self.  Parents should be teaching, not T.V. or games. Children then need "something" to keep them quiet - they are enable to just sit/listen/or follow directions...they have totally been controlled with "button amusement".   Parents do not take the time to "teach" - let them to be creative - give them personal quiet time - they are rushed to all activities - they are allowed to do as they please because the family time has not been enforced/stressed as to proper behavior or respect.  T.V. becomes the babysitter.  Respect: Key word leading to  most of the W.Disney "G" movies also :  Mostley, disrespect-wild motions-senseless type of imaginary entertainment-fantasy world of distruction/hitting/pushing/ violence/very few of down to earth family/friend sensitive teachings... they are.fast paced action-distorting - I do not believe most children are ADD- they have not been diciplined to learn family quality time - how to comply with constructive teaching and given plain quiet creative child time. T.V. is controlling our younger generation along with video games.  In due respect - there may be a few parents...still trying to instill the basic old values.....unfortunately...not enough of them.  It is easier to give a child a pill instead of taking the time from infancy to raise that child.  Making you wonder: Who comes first....me or my child's welfare.  Maybe they should try limiting T.V./game time only to weekend time- give them a book/game/crafts/outside play time-give them rules that must be followed/teach them respect/spend quality time and stop depending on schools or others to "train" their children - it begins at home at birth. The 1-2-3 or else is ridiculous....listenting begins with adult repect - playing games to encounter it is not the way the world challenges you.

(I got carried away - this is just for your reading - and hope you find my thoughts somewhat truthful.....these children are growing up spoiled/materialistic/selfish/and without values/or respect of authority and not being able to know reality from fiction.           Thanx for hearing me out.)

Most shows are simply mindless entertainment. Worse are the ones that promote violence as a normal part of American life.

Education is only happening on the underfunded public television channels. We are graduating children from high school who don't even know who George Washington was! This is appalling! Take our kids hand held calculators away, and they can't even make change for a dollar bill.

Television could educate our children as no other medium in our history, but money seems to rule over education, and it shows in our poorly educated society. Instead of education moving upward, it is headed for the toilet! Parents either don't have the time to educate their children, don't have the education themselves to do the job, or simply don't care.

Commercial advertising "rules" television! The drug companies are the worst! And we wonder why our kids are "druggies"? I don't! There is a pill for everything now, and television is now telling you to go to your doctor and "tell the doctor" what you need! It doesn't matter that you haven't spent ten years in medical school; just watch a drug commercial (don't listen to the drug side-effects that could kill you) and you now know more than your doctor does!

Education takes a backseat to "breaking news", "sports heroes being locked up in jail for more crimes committed by them", and the latest is the "paranoia" being brought to us by "the sky is falling" people (what if we are hit by a giant meteorite that will wipe us all out! The end of civilization and mankind! What if a "mega-volcano" covers us all under a thousand feet of "pyroclastic flow"? What if a "tsumani" were to wash us all off of the North American continent? What will happen to us all when the sun burns out in a few billion years? Like we are going to be around to worry about it?).
Remember the "Y2K" scare where all of our computers were going to go" belly-up" at the turn of the century, in the year 2000, and we were going to have to kill our neighbors for food? And the Communists were going to take advantage of the Y2K situation and "nuke" all of us? And we could blame the entire mess on those damned "liberals"? Some of my idiot friends were actually stocking up on guns, ammo, and foodstuffs! One even bought a Hummer and was welding bullet proof steel plates to the doors! The only reason that he didn't build a bomb shelter is that he spent all of his savings on the Hummer!

This is the paranoia that the news media thrives upon! They are like sharks at a "feeding frenzy"!
"Bad news" is the best news of all for them! "Man shoots entire neighborhood, then shoots self"! "More gory details at eleven"! Stay tuned! They love it! Of course, there is no "good news"! No way!

Yes, television could be a wonderful tool for education. Unfortunately, it is in the hands of the corporate "money-grubbers" who worship at the "Altar of Dollars" , the same type of people that Jesus threw off of the steps of the Temple.

Then we have Pat Robertson (telling the government that God told him to to them kill South American presidents), the PTL Baker type swindlers (send money now, or God doesn't love you), and then there is Jimmy Swaggart (who the Devil just won't keep from dragging into whorehouses against his will). That Devil is one really bad dude! He just won't leave poor Jimmy alone!
They are all out to "save" us from burning in "eternal damnation" (send them money and you'll be O.K.)! This is television?

My advice! Turn the "boob tube" off and take your kids to the public library. My two daughters already had their public library cards, and were reading at high school level before they entered the first grade at the public school system! Their teachers were astounded! I wasn't! Kids are capable of a whole lot more than we give them credit for! What ever happened to common sense?

Hi Fran,

Thanks for your input. You didn't get "carried away".

You said a lot of things that needed to be said! A lot more needs to be said to the "Wall Street Crowd" who puts money ahead of the future of our children.
We are the wealthiest country in the world, and we are rapidly becoming the poorest educated country in the world! In a lot of areas, we are now a "third world country". This is sad!

I am a Native American, and our people know that our children are our future. Seven generations of unborn are considered in all things that we do! We have a responsibility to them. We can't leave them a damned mess in which to live.
We are also taught to respect women, the "givers of life"! We are taught to respect elders!

Look around at our "dominant society" today! It is a "grab-it-and-growl" society that only values what we can do for ourselves (the attitude that "we who die with the most toys, wins", and to hell with the future of our own children). Money is everything! It has become the "God" of the majority of Americans!
Television promotes this materialistic approach to life! You are no longer judged by who you are, but what you have amassed as far as physical things!

We have certainly "lost our way" as a nation!

We cannot continue down this destructive path, if we are to be world leaders.

Television could lead the way to a better society, but it refuses to! It panders to greed, a sickness that will kill us quicker than any pandemic, such as bird flu!

Television is doing nothing to turn this situation around. In fact, television is one of our primary problems (other than the public television stations who have to beg for money to bring us quality television)!

Viewers are being taught that mindlress programing is the best entertainment! Sick jokes! Sexual innuendos that make women a source of violent "entertainment" for men! Soft porn! Outright porn! The use of guns and knives to solve any social and personal problems! And the CSI show is teaching criminals how to get away with murder.

We are no longer being taught to "think for ourselves", but we are really being taught to "go along with the crowd"!

The effect of television, in it's present form, is devastating to our children; the very future of America!

Television is actually "dumbing down" viewers. Television is "conditioning" us to accept mediocrity!

God help us all!

Keep speaking out Fran!

Take care,

I think there is a place for good quality TV for youngsters in limited quantity. Like all electronic entertainment it should be used as a tool for educational, recreational, and occassional diversion. The way it is utilized develops habits which begin early in life and these habits can become a big issue as the youngster grows up. Too much electronic entertainment may take the place of the child learning to entertain themselves with their own creativity such as reading, art, and music as human nature often is to take the easy way out and to follow the path of least resistance. It is not a bad thing for a child to become bored or mentally relaxed to a point in which they seek mental input and are active participants instead of  more passive entertainees. Also we need to look at all the electronics in one big umbrella and calculate a reasonable amount of time to spend either on the computer, gameboy, TV. etc. because we parents need to raise well rounded, self disciplined, contributing members of society which are not ruled by technology but are able to utilize it as one of their many life's tools. Remember early behaviors can turn into habits(good/bad ones) and it takes a good 30 days of hard work to change a bad habit to a better one as the child gets older so establish the guidelines and boundaries early as you are the parent and know better what is in the child's  best interest in the long run. And of course practice what you preach!!! Thanks for listening, Monique, mother of 2, and Occupational Therapist.

Did you folks see the story about John Erickson starting a TV network? That's what he did with the information. He was testing to see what we think about TV so he can make a successful network of his own.

Helen-

The name of the channel is Retirement Living.  You can watch it on CN8 (Comcast), it is also available on DirecTV if you're a subscriber.  I'm not sure where you live, but you can check for local listings at www.rl.tv
