i just figured out how to see my niece and nephew on the internet.  i bought one of those little clip on video cams from the local electronics store and they got one on their end.  we use the free msn service and i sign on every night (you don't have to do it that frequently) and i get to talk to them and see them at the same time (it's free).  i listen to them take their piano lessons, they read me the sunday paper to practice reading (i correct them as needed) and i can read along because we get the same insert in our paper out here that they do.

if anyone is interested in doing this i'll outline it for you further.  my brother says it's the best thing i've ever thought of.  i know i really enjoy it and feel like i'm much more a part of the kids development and lives.

by the way, alot of the local electronic stores like best buy, circuit city, buy.com, etc have these web cams on sale with rebates now for the holidays. i just ordered a backup one and it will end up being $5 after rebate. with the free msn service (you need your own internet connection) this is the most economical way to keep in touch.

i have now tried the video cam with the built in microphone and the video cam without a microphone where you have to supply your own. After testing them both using a cable internet connection and the free msn video cam service i have to concur that the video cam without the built in mic worked better for me in terms of reliability. Now each connection can vary. As in who you call and how they connect. But I had less freezing of the screens and less problems with the voices using my own microphone (which happens to be a $9.99 Labtec but it could be any, I think it's just more important that it is a separate unit).

and that's today epiphany on seeing your family from a distance.

just to clarify...
1.) you need to have a computer with an internet connection. Use whoever you wish for your internet server (although cable connections are faster and better for video..i have cox cable out here in phoenix)
2.) i use msn.com for my webcam connection. just go to msn.com and download the file for webcam usage.
3.) whoever you want to visit with using your webcam needs to have a webcam on their end and download the same msn program.

in the future an appropriate terminology for this type of interaction could be forever after as referred to as "Interaction Avenue"...since we are all interacting with family members in a new was that allows us to 'be there' for them, on screen. on camera. the aunt that lives in the computer screen in the den. My niece and nephew know exactily where to go in the house to find aunt karen. she inside the monitor!!!!

another update. i set my mothers computer up with a camera and we called my brother. very different experience than when i use mine. she has people pc for her internet provider and while they are excellent at everything else, the service seems to be too slow to use it for watching and sharing 'households'. the images were jerky and slow. the voices took a while to catch up with the pictures. my cable moves like you are watching tv. the voices are in sync.

so, whether this holds true across the nation i cannot say. just my experience.

checking in to share my latest thoughts on internet sharing.

i believe there are times, when my extended family may behave differently towards one another because they think i may be online watching. This is a positive aspect to setting up an internet webcam arrangement. I believe they may be kinder to one another in certain circumstances, because of that.
