As reported by Richard Daub in his three-part series in The Erickson Tribune, states that are strapped for money are selling toll roads to private companies. What a dumb-downed country we live in.  We (or more correctly about half the voters) elected a lying administration that took us into an unnecessary war that is now bleeding the U.S. Treasury at the rate of 2 billion dollars a week, not to mention the gastly toll in human suffering. We are destroying Iraq's infrastructure which will then be rebuilt by graft-guzzling companies like Cheney's Halliburton.

We need election reform that prevents those who have the power, i.e., money, to select the candidates in primary elections. Until then things will get worse. There are proposals beng floated around the country to eliminate entitlements such as kindergarden and free school bus transportation. This, in the richest country in the world. Would that we had brains to match our wealth.

Yes, sell the toll roads to private companies, but make sure there is competition.

Let private companies own the toll roads. Let their stockholders get a piece of paper that shows their wealth. Tax their profits. Tax the bondholders’ interest. Let them put their management genius and efforts to work. They all eventually die and then tax their estates and divide up their paper wealth. The rest of us poor slops can enjoy their hard work and efficiency and use the toll roads. This is the great benefit of capitalism. The greedy work hard because they think they are benefiting themselves when in fact, they are benefiting all of us dumber and lazier people.

It would not be necessary to sell our highways if Congress would STOP RAIDING the Highway Trust Fund. We pay high gasoline (and other auto related) taxes, and Congress steals the money for their pet home (say "vote buying") projects.

I am against selling to private companies for a couple of reasons, what happens to the money received in the purchase. Does it go into the general fund to be wasted on some democrat give away wellfare projectg to buy more votes? Second, what happens when they don't maintain the roads to an acceptable standard? At least now we can vote the bums out, with private companies what do we do call Customer Service and press 1 to speak to someone in English.

Miserabull- You make a good point about private companies not maintaining the roads to acceptable standards.  In Orange County, they didn't have that exact problem, but something along those lines.  A toll road was built and run for $130 million by the California Private Transportation Company, which is partly owned by a France-based company.  Within seven years, Orange County had complete gridlock on the road, but were unable to build any more roads because of a provision in the lease-- ultimately, they had to buy back the lease-- for $207.5 million.
