I've seen a lot of asphalt in the U.S., and I tend to try and avoid the Interstates whenever possible. Here are my top three favorite stretches of highway:
1. Dalton Highway, Alaska: you can take this one all the way up to Prudhoe Bay, but beware-- not all of it is paved, and there are no toilets, just outhouses
2. Highway 101, Oregon: a sometimes precarious twisty two-lane road along the coast, but the view of the Pacific is worth the risk
3. Highway 50, Nevada: from Reno straight across the desert into Nevada (or vice versa) with Sand Mountain in between, the desert at its finest (and considerably less developed than other sections of desert in the U.S.)-- just make sure you fill the gas tank whenever you have a chance because the towns are few and far between
