This article bySmith and Herreldt is so irresponsible that it deserves a retraction in a future issue of "The Tribune". Actually, America is among the lowest countries in per/capita giving to world wide causes. Finland gives more! I would suggest that you check out some of the back issues of the publication of "Stanford Social Innovation Review", particularly the article in the fall 2006 issue by Claude Rosenberg and Tim Stone, entitled "A New Take on Tithing". I will not take up your valuable time by quoting from it now but I hope you will read it and republish your findings in a future issue. Thank you for your thinking about this issue. Mr. Leslie

What Mr. Leslie says is quite true. There are several countries like Finland where per capita giving to worldwide causes is greater than in the U.S. However, our piece was focused on the contribution side of the equation and its effect on local and national organizations, only.

Furthermore, we believe that Rosenberg and Stone are right in suggesting that people in the U.S. do not realize how much they can afford to give to charity and do so on an ad hoc basis. As they suggest, another $100B in giving could do wonders in helping relieve both domestic and worldwide woes.

I believe that charity begins at home, perhaps you should look under Houston freeways and make a trip to the homeless shelters.
