Among the residents present at Wind Crest’s Veterans Day celebration was a woman who served as a code breaker for the British Navy in World War II.
Maureen Rodgers was just 19 when she started serving in 1942 as one of the code breakers of Bletchley Park. She worked tirelessly to break the signal traffic from German Enigma machines and more complex codes used by Hitler and his high command. The work remained classified until the 1980s. After the war, Rodgers went to Germany to assist with relief efforts but was accidentally sent to the American zone, where she met her American husband.
During Wind Crest’s Veterans Day ceremony, former soldiers were asked to stand and be recognized for their military service as various U.S. wars were named. Medal recipients were also recognized.
