How to retire recreationally

People who live at Wind Crest are faced with some difficult decisions: Which clubs do I want to join? Should I go to Costa Rica? Are there any performances I want to see?

Between country line dancing, woodworking, the Model Railroad Club, ladies’poker, and a walking group, Wind Crest resident Priscilla Payne says she’s on the go every day. “I’m getting too busy,” she says half-jokingly.

Pick and choose
The list of activities at Wind Crest is growing exponentially, reports Community Resources Manager Sharon Prouse.

“We’ve only been open five months, but our list is growing faster than other communities’ that have been open for years,” she says.

Since most clubs and activities are resident requested or suggested, there’s quite a variety—writing, ballroom dancing, and everything in between.

From casinos to Costa Rica!
For some fun off campus, Wind Crest’s Transportation Department organizes casino excursions, scenic drives to see the fall colors, and bus trips to cultural events downtown, among a variety of other outings—at a significant discount.

So far, the savings have been huge, like $25 admission to Le Corsaire, a  Pirate’s Adventure—down from $110 per ticket.

Taking advantage of this benefit has become quite popular among residents,  according to Wind Crest Driver Mary Pearson: “Our trip to see the musical White Christmas filled to capacity in a matter of days, and we have a wait list of ten more who want to go.”

Perks for one and all
In an effort to extend these savings to residents who don’t sign up in time to get on the bus, the community has also made discounts available on an individual basis.

Molly Epstein, group sales manager for the Colorado Ballet and Colorado Symphony, told the Tribune that everyone should have the opportunity to experience Denver’s worldclass symphony and ballet.  “I’m thrilled to make the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and Colorado Ballet available to the residents of Wind Crest,” she says. “Once we get them in the doors for the first time, they’ll want to come back again and again!”

The convenience factor
And people at Wind Crest do keep coming back. The list of clubs and events on and off campus seems to be growing by the day.

“It’s easier to take part in multiple activities here, because it’s so convenient,” says Payne. “There’s no driving or wasted time.”

As of October, there were 11 off-site outings available— like a nine-day trip to Costa Rica in April including roundtrip airfare, hotel stay, most meals, and nonstop fun.
