Minutes after arriving at work on Friday, August 17, Wind Crest Dining Services Manager Claire Menefee wrote a $25 check to the Alzheimer’s Association for their upcoming Memory Walk. It was “E-mail-Free Friday,” and as a fund-raiser, everyone was to refrain from sending in-house e-mails, or pay $1 for each one they sent.

Fund-raising teams
Menefee was among countless staff members and residents who teamed up to raise funds for this year’s Memory Walk, which took place on September 15 in Denver. They raised more than $5,000 through various events at Wind Crest. Erickson’s corporate office is matching that number for a total donation in excess of $10,000 to the local Alzheimer’s Association.

Community Resource Manager Sharon Prouse, who was among 30 Wind Crest staff members and residents who walked, says this project brought everyone closer. “Not only did we find many unusual ways to raise money, but we began working as a team,” she says. “Many of us started this project as strangers. But through this, we grew into friends—and now, we’ve become a family.”

Taking time to help
Inspired by her own mother and a friend with Alzheimer’s, Wind Crest community member Joyce Pearson spearheaded a letter-writing campaign—one that ultimately accounted for more than 15% of Wind Crest’s total donation this year.

Pearson sent letters to friends and acquaintances across the country, telling personal stories and illustrating the devastating effects of the disease. Soon, checks and cash poured in from coast to coast—including donations from two former classmates and the 90-year-old friend of Pearson’s late mother. In total, she received $1,630 in support of Colorado’s 64,000 Alzheimer’s sufferers.

“It was wonderful to see how many people wanted to help,” Pearson says.

Beyond Wind Crest, many other Erickson communities across the country raised funds this year for area Memory Walks. Last year, Erickson communities contributed a total of $65,000 to the Alzheimer’s Association.
