Looking for something to do to get into the holiday spirit? Well, if you have a free evening in December, Richard and Alice Kloewer would love it if you stopped by to see their Christmas display.

If you happen to be by these Erickson Tribune readers’ house, just eight miles from the Wind Crest Welcome Center, you’ll see it. In fact, it would be difficult to miss.

It’s the house with over 7,000 twinkle lights. And then there’s the model trains in the front yard, usually about ten going at a time, traveling on over 1,200 feet of model train tracks.

A celebration unlike any other
“It is a nice way to celebrate the season,” Alice said of the display. What started as a couple of ornaments and a strand of lights as a small commemoration for their first-born grandchild, grew into a display of enormous proportion. Twenty-four years later, the display includes anything Christmas and holiday related.

Alice said, “No matter where we go, we’re looking for something new. I’m not always sure if things will work, but when we see something, my husband knows instantly” if it’s right for the display.

Personal favorites
The display is so popular because of the diversity of decorations, Richard said, “Trains are my hobby. I belong to a few train clubs, but there is something here for everybody. Harley Davidson models, Englewood cheerleader dolls—If you can name it, we probably have it.”

Richard said, “Kids always ask where their favorite things are displayed, but we try to change it up, and move the decorations around. The trains are a huge hit, everyone seems to like them. You have to get out and see it. I guess it’s the detail.”

“The manger scene is always the centerpiece for me,” Alice said.

The nuts and bolts
The display is truly a labor of love. Set-up begins two weeks before Halloween. Richard begins by running the electrical groundwork. “Oh it takes awhile,” He said. “I have to start early or it wouldn’t get done in time.”

The couple wouldn’t divulge how much they’ve spent on the decorations, or how much their electric bill runs in December. “The electric bills go up a little,” Alice said. “People always ask us how much it is, but we’ll never tell.”

National recognition
The couple from Englewood has received the acclaim from neighbors and national media outlets alike. Four years ago the couple finished second in the Today Show’s national house decorating contest and appeared on Home and Garden TV’s “Crazy for Christmas” show.

Living the holiday
But what’s it like living next door to the display?

“It’s a pleasure to have them as neighbors,” Joanne Newblom said. She lives directly across the street from the Kloewers. “It’s fun to watch the joy the display brings to people. I have people over to have hot chocolate and look at it. My grandchildren love it. The display gives me the opportunity to connect with family and friends too.” She added, “I don’t think any of the other neighbors mind either.”

“They are patient and understanding,” Richard said of his neighbors.

Newblom said, “It’s hard not to be. It’s just so nice to see all of the hard work that they go through for the enjoyment of others.”

On the busiest weekend, after the Today Show filming, the Kloewers saw close to 3,500 visitors. On the average night, a few hundred visitors generally stop by to take a look. “There’s no parking for a block or two around our house,” Richard said. “But the neighbors have been great.”Alice added, “The neighbors have never complained. They are always understanding. Everyone just gets into the Christmas spirit.”
