Denver Couple Looks Forward to Next Step |
| | Posted on Wednesday, November 01, 2006 | | | The Noreen Family Prepares to Move to Wind Crest
By Alice Barrett Mack THE ERICKSON TRIBUNE
Ruth and Stan Noreen are so enthusiastic about moving to Wind Crest that they decided to forego an ocean cruise lest they miss their chance to reserve their apartment home. “We wanted to be around in case our opportunity to reserve an apartment at Wind Crest comes up. We’re ready to move.” With so many people hoping for a home in the Wind Crest community, it looks like the Noreens have made the right decision because the first residence building, Cottonwood Court, is nearly sold out.
Many Interests: Some Shared . . . Some Separate
The Noreens are avid readers who also share an interest in music, their family, and church activities, including singing in a choir and socializing with friends. Stan loves to be outside and is particularly enthusiastic about walking and hiking. Ruth is also a fitness buff, but prefers to be indoors. She swims at least three times a week, takes exercise classes, and enjoys knitting. So, while Stan hikes the Highline Canal trails, accessible from Wind Crest, Ruth will be able to swim in the all-season pool. Or, she might opt to watch a baseball game—at the same time that she knits an afghan, a sweater, or maybe a hat for a child on an Indian reservation. | |

Embracing Life
Ruth and Stan both embrace life. They have known each other for more than 60 years. “We had our first date in 1944,” explains Stan. They married other people and the two couples stayed close friends for many years. Stan and his first wife moved from Minnesota to the Denver area and raised their family while he operated six bookstores. Ruth and her first husband spent ten years in Ecuador working for an international missionary radio station while they raised their family. Each of their spouses died within a short time of each other. Ruth and Stan eventually went from friendship to taking the next step in their lives. They have now been married for ten years, making them not-quite newlyweds— but just as happy.
Prefering No Maintenance
Currently, the Noreens divide their time between a house in Arizona and a house in Denver, but “the maintenance of two big houses has become too much.” They plan to sell both houses. Their nine children (grandchildren and greatgrandchildren) are delighted that their parents will be moving to an easier, maintenance-free life-style. Ruth and Stan are happy to be able to free their children from any concerns about them. In addition, Stan says “We like the Wind Crest community, we love the location, and we like how Erickson does business. And, we’ll get all our money back if we leave. No other community has that feature.”
Meeting New People
In talking with the Noreens, their love of people came through clearly. Their relationships are important to both of them. They’re delighted that they will know people right away—friends have already reserved a fourth floor apartment home at Cottonwood Court—and that they’ll have the opportunity to build new friendships.
They also like the convenience of the two on-site restaurants. “We’ll be able to eat at either of the two restaurants we choose. So, we’ll get to meet a lot of new people.”
The Next Step . . .
When I asked Stan to tell me one thing he would like people to know about him, his response was that he is “very thankful that he was able to get together with Ruth. Sometimes people are afraid to take the next step. For us, it has been a wonderful experience.” They are now looking forward to the future and to another “next step” in their lives.
