Wind Crest Marks a Place on Your Horizon With Historical Windmill
By Carrie Anne Deters
THE ERICKSON TRIBUNE
The Wind Crest name materializes in the form of a windmill which has been erected on-site to recognize the significance of the ranch lands that gave way to the Wind Crest property.
The windmill is an integral part of a colorful and inviting landscape plan designed by local landscape architectural firm, Norris Dullea. It marks a quiet garden area welcoming to all for strolling, reflecting, or picnicking. Benches will also be conveniently placed for those paging through an interesting book or simply watching people pass by.
The Windmill Man
Russ Furler
, a windmill restorer, erected the Aermotor windmill on the Wind Crest property. Russ services, restores, and installs windmills for ranchers all over Colorado and the surrounding states. He acquired the Wind Crest windmill from a ranch in Albuquerque where it stoodfor over 70 years. Servicing the ranch for so long—the windmill evolved with the property—a motor built by Aeromotor of Chicago increased its productivity.
Purposeful Windmills in Colorado
Colorado pioneers found ways to harness the powers of the wind. Using techniques of their ancestors, ranchers built windmills to bring water from deep within the ground. In the Denver area, windmills were essential to driving ways of life—the energy they produced ground corn and wheat, sawed timber, and provided water for the boilers of steam engines.
Many Western towns developed around these windmills—they became known as a resting place, a place to find refreshment and a source of renewal for the weary traveler. Today, windmills facilitate the production of energy and electricity.
