In recognition of the Fourth of July, visit some of these nearby sites that celebrate
our country’s military history:

The National World War I Museum
at the Liberty Memorial in Kansas City, Mo. The nation’s official World War I museum, the state-of-the-art complex uses highly interactive technology to bring history to life. Admission is $7 for people ages 65 and older. For more information go to www.nww1.org.

Distance from Tallgrass Creek: 20 miles.

Fort Leavenworth at Leavenworth, Kans., is the oldest active Army post west
of the Mississippi River. Fort Leavenworth is considered one of the country’s most significant historic military installations.  The fort’s 5,634 acres contain a 213-acre National Historic Landmark District.  The Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery is one of the first 12 national cemeteries established by Abraham Lincoln on July 17, 1862.

Distance from Tallgrass Creek: 45 miles.

The Combat Air Museum in Topeka, Kans., is one of just a few major aviation
museums in the U.S. located on an active airfield. Visitors to the museum are regularly treated to flying activities of Air Force fi ghter aircraft and Army helicopter operations. With the second longest runway in the state of Kansas,
large refueling tanker aircraft of the Air National Guard and army troop
transports often fill the skies around the museum. The museum is located at Forbes Field in Topeka. Admission is $6. For more information go to www.combatairmuseum.org.

Distance from Tallgrass Creek: 75 miles.

The Dole Institute at the University of Kansas in Lawrence has an exhibit of photographs of World War II veterans from Kansas. More than 1,100 photographs are in an exhibit called The Memory Wall. All those photos plus
thousands more are available in a searchable computer kiosk at the institute.
