How to love everything you do

Spend some time with Wanda Williams and you’ll be seeing red.

Red is everywhere, from her living room furniture to her clothes, and even her dog’s collar and leash. No wonder red is her favorite color; it’s just like her—vibrant and full of energy.

Packed days
Williams’ days have been packed with activities and new friends since she and  her four-year-old schnauzer Lucy moved into their apartment home at Tallgrass Creek in October.

“I love it,” Williams says. “I love all of it. I didn’t realize how lonesome I was, living alone in my house.”

Along with keeping busy day-to-day, she has taken advantage of special  programs, classes, and events sponsored by Tallgrass Creek.

In November she attended the community’s Center for Continuous Learning programs on Big Band music and issues in the Middle East. She went to the Thanksgiving Interfaith service on campus. She joined other Tallgrass Creek residents on an outing to see the famous Christmas lights at Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza.

In December she helped decorate the community’s Christmas tree; each resident was asked to donate an ornament, and Williams’ was blue, white, and, of course, red.

Starting strong
As the day begins, Williams walks from her apartment home through the Audubon Clubhouse. She exchanges cheerful good mornings and hellos with residents and staff members, and it is as though she is walking down a main street in smalltown Kansas.

In the fitness center, which she tries to visit each morning, Williams gets to work. She does her cycling, her lifting, and her stretching. Accompanying her is Tallgrass Creek Wellness Coordinator Courtney Lockhart, who offers conversation and advice while she keeps track of Williams’ progress along the fitness plan they  designed together.

“No pain, no gain,” Williams says with her trademark smile and Texas accent.“I’m going to be Mrs. Charles Atlas,” she says as she moves to another piece of fitness equipment.

Afternoon romp
Then Williams—who doesn’t quite hit the five-foot mark—is off to the market on campus to buy a card for her sister-in-law. After lunch, she walks in the first-ever Tallgrass Creek Turkey Trot. Before and after the trot—which took residents on about a quarter-mile walk around the grounds—Williams and other residents mingle and pose for photographs with the  man-sized turkey.

But Lucy is waiting for Williams back in their apartment. Within a few minutes of Williams leaving the trot scene, the pair comes out the door and heads down the sidewalk toward Rudy’s Run, the community’s dog park. It is a sunny  afternoon, and Williams carries Lucy’s red flying disc toy with her.

Finding a place that Lucy would like was important to Williams. She wouldn’t  have  considered any community that wouldn’t take her dog. “I love it,” she says about Rudy’s Run, “because we can unleash. They can romp and play and run. I throw the Frisbee for Lucy. It’s perfect.”

Unwind and dine
Williams says her favorite part of the day at Tallgrass Creek is having dinner in the Blue Sky Restaurant. Her favorite dish is the salmon. This evening she sits at a corner table with three other residents.

“The end of the day is great,” Williams says. “I enjoy having dinner and chatting with all the other people. Everyone gets to catch up. We talk about anything  and everything. We talk about our kids, about how we’re glad we sold our homes so quickly, shopping. You know—all that fun stuff.”
