Resolve a new you

As the clock ticks away the final seconds of 2007, many of us make that yearly resolution—“I will lose weight.” We announce to ourselves and anyone within earshot that we will eat less and exercise more. Like with every other New Year’s Eve resolution, we will try . . .and most of us will fail.

A survey commissioned two years ago by Weight Watchers found that 45% of U.S. women said they would resolve to lose weight in the next year.

But resolving and doing are two different things, and most of us could use a little help.

“The key to weight loss and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is balance and moderation combined with regular exercise,” says Courtney Lockhart, wellness coordinator at Tallgrass Creek.

Lockhart works with Tallgass Creek residents in developing fitness and healthy eating plans. She can help people stick with their resolutions as the year moves along.

10 tips for staying on track
1.  Start slow. If you jump into a fitness plan, you may become overwhelmed and discouraged—and ultimately stop trying.
2.  Get involved in physical activities you know and like. For example, if you’ve always loved swimming, this might be the perfect time to swim on a regular basis at the Tallgrass Creek aquatics center.
3.  Set goals—realistic and specific rather than broad ones. For example, don’t say, “I’m going to lose weight.” Instead say, “I’m going to walk every day for ten minutes for the next two weeks.”
4.  Keep a food diary of what you’re eating. This will help you track your calories and find out whether you are getting enough nutrients.
5.  Avoid fad diets. Be skeptical of any diet that completely eliminates a food group or significantly deviates from what seems like a “typical” diet.
6.  There is no such thing as a magic weight loss drug. They could seem to “work” in helping you lose weight, but they may be having significant side effects on your body.
7.  Eat breakfast, or you’ll get hungry later in the day and slow down your metabolism.
8.  Eat snacks between meals. Don’t let five hours go by without eating. If there is too large of a lag, you may overeat later.
9.  Have a support system. Get together with friends and discuss your  achievements and frustrations. Eat a healthy meal together.
10.  Understand that lapsing is a typical behavior and should be expected. Get back on target and re-evaluate your original goals.
