“Jane McIntire is a rock star,” says a film crew member just before October’s grand opening ceremony at Tallgrass Creek.

The vivacious McIntire, retirement counselor at the community, has just been interviewed, and it’s no surprise that she did well in front of the camera.

Attention often swirls around McIntire. Not because she demands it, but because it rests comfortably with her. She greets new acquaintances with warm handshakes, old friends with hugs, and everyone with beaming smiles. She shares look-you-straight-in-the-eye conversations.

“Jane has an enthusiasm for life that is contagious, palpable,” says Tallgrass Creek Director of Marketing Suzanne Cole. “Her sincere concern for our residents—present and potential—is tough to turn away from. All of our residents think of her as an advocate and friend.”

Loves her job
McIntire says that each and every day she looks forward to coming to work, where she helps seniors plan for their retirement.

“I love my job,” she says. “I honestly don’t have a day when I don’t. I’m a total people person. I like to talk, but I also like to listen.”

Growing up in Salem, Mass., where her father was a professor of meteorology and her mother was a work-at-home mom and an office administrator, McIntire lived just a few blocks from her Grandmother Nana and Great Aunt Honey.  She enjoyed visiting with them, learning from them, and helping them when they needed it.

A career with Erickson
“My love for Nana and Honey gave me the passion,” she says. “My  family friendship with one of the physicians at Brooksby helped guide me toward Erickson.”

After receiving her degree in health care administration from Stonehill College in Easton, Mass., McIntire took her first position in an Erickson community as a marketing assistant at Brooksby Village in Peabody, Mass. She then worked at Linden Ponds in Hingham, Mass., before coming to Tallgrass Creek in 2006.

McIntire continues to work with Erickson for two main reasons—people and passion.

“I love working with prospective residents and  interacting with my colleagues and the people who live here,” she says. “I am a people person—there is no doubt! Also, I am dedicated and passionate about what we do. I believe in our communities providing a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Simply put, our residents have fun!”

Cosmo girl
Moving halfway across the country to Kansas could have provided McIntire with quite a culture shock, but she says she has discovered people aren’t that different.

“Kansas City is more cosmopolitan than it gets credit for,” she says. “It is a mediumsized city with lots of culture and there’s a lot to do. I do a lot of road races—three since my move here,” she adds.

McIntire loves the nightlife, art galleries and museums, dining, festivals, and opportunities to hear a variety of music. She especially loves the shopping.

“When you consider these features, along with the people I have met along the way—kind, easygoing Midwesterners—Kansas City certainly makes for an exceptional place to live!” she says.

Spare time and the Yankees
McIntire is not without inconsistency. Despite growing up outside of Boston, she is a New York Yankees fan. She explains that the McIntires needed a team to cheer for after the Boston Braves left town for Milwaukee in  1953. The family decided on the closest team that wasn’t the Red Sox, and the tradition was passed down.

Although no Yankees souvenirs are displayed in her office in the Audubon Clubhouse, there are a few personal photographs and  plaque about the importance of teamwork. It is here where she meets and talks with and gets to know future members of the Tallgrass Creek community. They share their lives with her and trust her to help them move into an exciting future.

“The interactions with people,” McIntire says, “are what really make this job.” And she believes in what Erickson has to offer.

Reading, running, and “The Bachelor”
“If they had an Erickson community for 29-year-olds, I’d be there,” McIntire says. “I don’t like to cook and I like to meet people.”

In her spare time McIntire enjoys working out and running. She is an avid reader—the latest book she finished was The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. Her favorite author is Philip Roth. Her guilty pleasure is watching “The Bachelor” on TV.
