“Benny Goodman versus Glenn Miller: Titans of the Swing Era”
Thursdays: November 1, 8, & 15, from 2–4 p.m.

This course will compare and contrast the greatest hits, careers, and  personalities of the Swing Era’s two greatest stars. Join us as they go head-to-head in a three-round event dedicated to their memory.

Course led by Todd Wilkinson, D.M.A., Washburn University’s former  Director of Jazz Studies. Todd is the past president of Kansas City Jazz Ambassadors and former owner of the Drum Room Jazz Club in Kansas  City. He has been a featured saxophonist with the K.C. Bottoms Band, the Boulevard Big Band, the Kansas City Chiefs’ TD Pack Band, and Bokomaru.

“Islam and the Middle East”
Tuesdays: November 6, 13, & 27, from 9–11 a.m.

Islam’s self-understanding as the one true religion for all humanity has often been misunderstood. This course will focus on the modern challenges Islam  faces and the responses from reformers seeking to adapt Islam to Western thought, socialist Islamic thinkers, and contemporary Islamists, who insist on the primacy of Islamic religion over Western secularism.

Course led by Margaret Rausch, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Kansas. Fields of interest include: Islamic history, Sufism, women in Islam, popular religious expression in Islam,  and Muslim women singers.
