“Good health gives people the ability to get out and socialize, get out and worship, and do what they want to do,” says John Harned, executive director of Tallgrass Creek, an Erickson community in Overland Park, Kans. “We strive to focus on wellness and strength, not illness and weakness.”
With that in mind, Tallgrass Creek is designed to help and inspire residents to stay fit, Harned says. For example, the pool, spa, and fitness center will be available within an easy walk for all residents.
Program improves health
When the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee started a fitness program for adults 50 and older, the results were impressive. Participants who visited the fitness center three times a week increased their strength by an average of 25% in the first 15 weeks. There was also a 17% gain in cardiovascular endurance and a 9% gain in flexibility.
Mental health benefits also came from the Milwaukee program. Anxiety and depression dropped about 44%, which university experts attributed to both the improved physical fitness and increased social contact.
Community’s approach
Fitness equipment at Tallgrass Creek will be pneumatic, allowing users to build strength from resistance, not from lifting weights, Harned explains. There will also be one-on-one training available to help residents develop personal fitness plans.
Tallgrass Creek community members can also walk year-round. When the Kansas weather turns cold, hot, rainy, or snowy, residents can use the indoor walkways. When skies are sunny, they can take advantage of walking trails and ample space outside.
Good food and friends help
Healthy food choices will definitely be on the menu at Tallgrass Creek’s two on-site restaurants—Blue Sky restaurant and Sunflower Bistro.
Another important aspect of staying healthy is socializing. Residents can be in any of dozens of activities, ranging from yoga classes to educational programs.
