Safety first!

Peace of mind is being built in to every home at Tallgrass Creek

THE ERICKSON TRIBUNE

Kansas City officials are working hard at reducing crime in the city and suburbs. But despite their efforts, a recent survey published in the Kansas City Star revealed that only 30% of residents have an overall feeling of safety.

Home security is always a hot topic of conversation. But future residents of Tallgrass Creek, the new Erickson community coming to Overland Park later this year, can already rest easy because personal safety and your resident welfare is top priority.

Going far beyond protection from muggers, vandals, and burglars, Tallgrass Creek will feature round-the-clock monitoring for fires, emergency situations, home safety assistance, medical calls, and much more.

“Everyone deserves to feel safe at home, at every hour of the day and night,” Jane McIntire, retirement counselor at Tallgrass Creek, said. “And our residents will have that very same peace of mind,” she said. “It’s a comfort to be able to sit out on the patio as the sun sets, or take a moonlight walk around the garden, and never have cause for concern.” Mcintire continues, “And, it’s reassuring to know that even if you’re thousands of miles away on a cruise ship off the coast of Alaska, your home is being carefully looked after.”

Safety from the first moment
At Tallgrass Creek, safety will start at the front gate. Front-gate attendants will be on duty 24 hours a day, every day of the year. And they are trained to be welcoming to the people that live there, but also very watchful. No visitor is allowed to enter the campus without stopping first to check in and ensure they have a legitimate reason to be on campus.

Every member of the security staff is trained to the highest standards on the latest security techniques, and carefully supervised by experienced administrative officers. “These are professionals,” John Harned, executive director of Tallgrass Creek, said. “And they do their job very well. Just like every Tallgrass Creek staff member, they are put through a vigorous selection process and background check.” he added, “We only hire the best, most qualified and trustworthy staff.”

Keeping an eye out
The friendly officers spend their days and nights on the lookout for your welfare. Regular outdoor tours are made of the grounds at least once every hour, including all the paths, parking areas, and outside amenities. They are always on the lookout for illegally parked cars or anything else that might indicate unusual activities, as well as people who might need assistance, or may be experiencing some other sort of difficulty.

Likewise, on the interior, staff members walk the corridors, elevators, and stairways to be certain they are clear of potentially hazardous situations.

A watchful eye also means more freedom for Tallgrass Creek residents. Being able to leave and know your property is secure is attractive to many who are choosing Tallgrass Creek.

“It was really the lock and leave idea that we were attracted to,” Todd and Beth Cannon, Priority List members from Overland Park, said about Tallgrass Creek. “It’s nice to have the security of a gated community where you know your home and things are secure and will be watched” should you choose to go on vacation.

The first response is the best response
But keeping residents safe means a number of talents are needed. All members of the security staff are also cross-trained as medical first-responders, with regular updates on CPR and first aid, McIntire explained. “So, even should an emergency arise such as an accident or illness, expert help is always just a heartbeat away,” McIntire said. “Our security personnel are all trained to assess the situation, and then render appropriate aid.”

And with the help of the Centricity electronic medical records system, Tallgrass Creek officials can safely advise the first-responder of any medications or conditions that may require special treatment.

If the situation is too serious for treatment at the Tallgrass Creek Medical Center, the team supports and monitors the patient until they are safely on their way to the emergency room.

Just in case…
Buildings and apartments will also be equipped with the most reliable smoke detectors that undergo regular testing and inspections. Additionally, there are fire extinguishers in all hallways, and residents are encouraged to have a personal fire extinguisher in their homes. Fire extinguishers and fire doors are inspected every month.

Likewise, automatic fire sprinklers are present in all common areas of the buildings, and every apartment home. Each apartment home also has an emergency call system for use in case of a medical emergency. So if a resident has an accident, feels ill, or is just uneasy about something, expert assistance can be there in minutes.
