Tallgrass Creek Launches Erickson Center for Continuous Learning

By Mark Meisenheimer
COMMUNITY RELATIONS ASSOCIATE

“If you don’t like the weather, just wait a few minutes, it’ll probably change.”

There’s no doubt that if you have lived in the Kansas City area you’ve heard that phrase uttered countless times. And nobody knows that better than KMBC’s chief meteorologist, Bryan Busby. You can find out first-hand when Busby speaks at the Tallgrass Creek Welcome Center on October 5 as part our Center for Continuous Learning curriculum. And while we are excited to bring to the public the chance to meet one of Kansas City’s most wellliked meteorologists, the four-time Emmy winner is just part of the program that we’ll be featuring this fall. Center for Great Ideas The Center for Continuous Learning developed as part of John Erickson’s vision to provide a meaningful, valuable lifetime learning experience to people during retirement.

The center, at 139th and Metcalf in Overland Park, will open to the public as part of the Tallgrass Creek Welcome Center—bringing free classes, seminars, and unique experiences to area residents. Once the Tallgrass Creek community opens in the fall of 2007, the Center for Continuous Learning will continue to develop as a vital community resource for all people—residents and neighbors alike. As Tallgrass Creek’s community relations associate, I look forward to planning inspiring and informative seminars, and meeting the great folks that make our community special.

Back to School
In an effort to present classes dealing with issues people face in retirement, the center will hold four classes, free of charge, for people wanting to learn something new or expand their knowledge in other areas. School starts on September 21 at 1:30 and each session will last approximately one hour. Best of all, there’s no homework and everyone is given an “A.” I wish this system would have been around when I was in school!

Bring Your Thinking Cap
Our first featured speaker will be Jim Kinyon, a financial planner who’s been advising folks from Kansas City for years on the best ways to plan for their retirement. He’ll kick off our fall schedule with “Exploring Options for a Quality Retirement.”

Bring your thinking cap; Jim has some great ideas to help you find the best way to invest your hard-earned money. “My seminar will focus on avoiding costly investment mistakes, taking advantage of 2006 tax laws, and protecting yourself from market downturns,” says Jim.

He’ll have much more, but you’ve already sold me, Jim. I won’t miss it.

Career Day Dreams
When I was in grade school, I was under the illusion that someday I would pitch a game in the World Series. KMBC’s Bryan Busby had a much better vision of how his life would turn out. “I love my job. It was a childhood dream of mine to be doing the weather. Since the third grade, this is what I wanted to do. I have a blast up there and I hope it shows.”

If you reserve a seat at the Tallgrass Creek Welcome Center on October 5, you can see that enthusiasm firsthand. Besides sharing his knowledge on broadcast meteorology, he’ll take you inside the storm, helping you understand severe weather. But remember, don’t get mad at him for the weather, he’s just the messenger not the maker. Classes are free and open to the public. Space is limited, so you’ll want to get your reservation in as soon as soon as possible. Just call 913-897-2700.

Perfect Vintage
Okay, okay, I admit it. Back in high school, I was often caught napping through my first couple of classes. But once I got to third period, my day was rolling. And you won’t want to miss our next class on October 26. Todd Klaus, from Off the Vine, a local wine specialty store, brings unique wines from around the world. Todd’s selection is made up of obscure wines you probably can’t find in too many stores. “We’re going to give them good wines as well,” adds Klaus. “But just because they’re good wines, that doesn’t mean they will be expensive wines.” Mission accomplished, Todd, I’m learning already.

European Holiday
“Not so quick! The bell doesn’t dismiss you, I do.”

Did you ever hear that from one of your teachers? We won’t run such a tight ship, but you certainly don’t want to miss our final class before semester break. After all, how many classes can offer a trip to Europe? And you don’t even have to leave the confines of our wonderful city.

That’s because world traveler and historian Fred Hartman will bring the world to you in our Welcome Center. Fred has 31 years of experience traveling the globe and has visited 18 countries. Heck, I haven’t even been out of the United States, unless you count that spring break trip to Mexico.

Unlike myself, Fred has seen quite a bit. And he’ll show you on November 9 with his “The Best of Europe” seminar. “Traditionally it’s been the place to go for decades,” says Fred on traveling to Europe. “You have so much to see in such a small amount of space. You get a lot of bang for your buck.”

Claim Your Seat
I couldn’t have said it any better…that is, about the Tallgrass Creek Center for Continuous Learning. It won’t be like trying to get into Harvard, but we do expect these classroom sessions to fill up. So mark them on your calendar and make a reservation by calling 913-897-2700. Each session starts at 1:30 p.m. and runs approximately 60 minutes.

Light refreshments will be served: And don’t worry about the school supplies— we’ll have pen and pads for you to take notes if you wish.

Just bring yourself to the Tallgrass Creek Welcome Center. We’ll see you soon!
