Where is financial security hiding?

There are many things that can yield happiness during retirement: grandchildren, free time, long-awaited travel, and afternoons on the golf course or lunch with friends. But without financial security, it can be more difficult to truly enjoy your "freedom years."

According to Tracy Dellaria, a retirement counselor at Sedgebrook, in Lincolnshire, one of the most important financial considerations for older adults is being able to avoid unexpected expenses and protect your nest egg with solid, guaranteed investments.

Avoiding unexpected expenses
For example, Dellaria says, Sedgebrook’s fixed monthly service package, which includes all household expenses, utilities, and one meal a day, better enables residents to prepare for their futures.

"All the utilities, basic cable, and all the maintenance are included in one monthly fee," Dellaria says. "So if a plumbing issue arises or if an appliance breaks or the heat needs to be cranked up, they still pay the same amount each month, rather than it fluctuating as it would if they owned a house."

Dellaria says most people find that the all-inclusive monthly service package is very affordable. And recently, to make the Erickson retirement lifestyle attainable for even more people, Sedgebrook reduced the cost of the monthly service package.

"I don’t know of any homeowner or other community that can say their monthly expenses have come down," Dellaria says.

Protect your nest egg
Another feature that draws financially savvy retirees to the community is the 100% refundable entrance deposit, Dellaria says. People have worked hard to build their nest eggs, and Dellaria says they want to know their money will be safe.

The 100% refundable entrance deposit achieves something few investments can promise these days—a guaranteed return.

"Other communities only give back a portion," Dellaria says. "Our residents like that they are preserving their estate for their heirs."

A low price for peace of mind
With the housing market in flux, Dellaria says the financial security people find at Sedgebrook is a more attractive option than ever before.

"The security of knowing what your monthly expenses will be means good peace of mind," Dellaria says. "There are no surprises on a monthly basis like you would anticipate as a homeowner if you had to pay for repairs or replacement of items."

Peace of mind is exactly what Irene Paja found when she moved to Sedgebrook after her husband passed away. Since her husband had taken care of their finances, managing monthly expenses was a new stress for her. But now that she lives at Sedgebrook, Paja only has to pay one low monthly bill to cover all of her living expenses.

"I don’t have to worry about electric and gas," Paja says. "That would have been a worry [if I lived at my house], but here I don’t have to worry."

Paja says her 46-year-old Deerfield house was starting to require a lot of costly repairs when she decided to sell it. So instead of sinking her retirement nest egg into home maintenance, Paja knows that money is being preserved in her 100% refundable entrance deposit at Sedgebrook

"Most [retirement communities] talk about you getting 80% back, so this was wonderful," Paja says of Sedgebrook’s 100% refundable deposit.

And since she doesn’t have to worry about her finances, Paja is enjoying her retirement with new and old friends at Sedgebrook. Her next-door neighbor of many years also lives at the community, and Paja says she has made many new friends as well.

"It’s working out wonderfully," Paja says. "I’ve met a lot of nice people."
