Sedgebrook Residents Take Control of Technology, Impress Their Grandkids.

by Melissa Borgerding

Can you check up on your family everyday without having to dial long-distance?  Can you type your correspondence and your annual holiday letter without hauling that clunky typewriter out from the closet?  Pull up a seat in Sedgebrook’s bustling computer lab and learn how more and more people are discovering the technological savvy they never knew they had, and finding out that, at Sedgebrook, the world is literally at your fingertips.

Exercise for Your Mind

There’s no denying that computers are a vital part of the world today.  It’s important to learn a little about them if you want to keep yourself even more current and up-to-date.  That’s why, when you move to Sedgebrook, you’ll receive an email account and your own private password to access a computer.

“We want people to live an active lifestyle,” says Michael McCann, Sedgebrook’s Community Services Manager.  “In order to be active, you have to keep learning and experiencing new things—including technology.”

Computer classes are just one of the fun and rewarding activities to keep you active and constantly learning at Sedgebrook.  Under the patient and expert instruction of resident teacher Mike Wager, you’re sure to become a computer pro in no time, even if the only keyboard you’ve ever touched is on a piano.

“Learning to use the computer is like exercise for your mind,” says Mike, who worked 45 years as a computer programmer before moving to Sedgebrook from Cary in July.  Just three weeks after moving in, Mike started teaching Beginner and Intermediate computer classes to other Sedgebrook residents.  He shows his students everything from reading and writing emails to surfing the internet.  Recently, his classes took a virtual tour of the Louvre Museum.  Already, Mike’s classes are so popular and his students progressing so quickly that he plans to start an Advanced class soon.

With so much knowledge and experience under his belt, Mike is the community’s go-to guy for computer questions and information.  But he says he’s just happy to see people take an interest in computers, especially those people who may never have used one before.  “You have to try something new and different.  It keeps you sharp,” he says.

Worry-Free Technology

Of course, sharpening your computer skills is much more fun in a convenient and stress-free environment like the lab at Sedgebrook.  Imagine the cost of buying a computer and all the expensive accessories yourself—and that doesn’t include the monthly fee you’ll pay in your house or condo for email and internet service.  Once you get the computer home, you’ll have to figure out where all those wires go to set it up.  And what happens if you get stuck?  Who can you ask for help?

If you’ve always wanted to hone your computer knowledge, but don’t want to deal with the stress and frustration of unfamiliar technology all by yourself, then pull up a chair in Sedgebrook’s computer lab.  You’ll find friendly, patient people happy to give you a hand.

Stay Connected

Once you log on, the possibilities are endless—peruse the news from around the world, find that perfect pie recipe, or plan your next out-of-town trip with just a few clicks of your mouse.  Carolyn Merrifield from Park Ridge doesn’t need to use her typewriter now that she’s moved to Sedgebrook.  “I was most interested in learning to use the computer keyboard so that I can write my Christmas cards,” she says.  “But I also wanted to learn how to send and receive email.”

Staying in touch with the people you care about may be the best reason to sharpen your computer skills.  Drop a line to your daughter in New York or check up on your grandkids in college.  They’ll be thrilled to hear from you and impressed by your computer savvy.

Of course, email will never replace the sound of a loved one’s voice on the phone, but it’s a great way to keep in touch and let someone know you’re thinking about them between phone calls.

So if you’re looking to build your computer know-how, pull up a seat at Sedgebrook’s computer lab and take control of technology.
