LINCOLNSHIRE, IL – At an annual awards banquet last week, Glenkirk, an organization that benefits Lake County residents with developmental disabilities, honored Sedgebrook with a Corporate Service Award and recognized Sedgebrook Associate Executive Director Brent Hall with a Resource Development Award.

Sedgebrook was presented with the distinguished Corporate Service Award not only for financial support, but also for its sincere and continued interest in Glenkirk’s programs. Glenkirk and Sedgebrook have formed a partnership through which the community provides financial support during fundraisers, organizes the on-site woodworking group to make birdfeeders that are sold to benefit the organization, and underwrites the holiday toy drive. During Glenkirk’s 2007 Mother’s Day lunch, Sedgebrook has also committed to “adopting” 10 Glenkirk participants celebrate the day with.

“Sedgebrook offers a human element to this partnership by trying to match needs and wants,” said Executive Director Ian Brown.

During the recent awards ceremony, Hall received the Resource Development Award, which honors an individual from a local company who has made an outstanding contribution of time, energy, and resources for increasing Glenkirk’s revenues. As a trustee, Hall jumped right in with a Sedgebrook sponsorship for last year’s benefit; organized the major toy drive during the holidays, donating more than $2,000-worth of educational toys for the Daisies Program; activated the Sedgebrook woodworking group as the supply line for the birdfeeder program; and chaired the sponsorship committee for Glenkirk’s 2007 benefit.

Sedgebrook residents Ruth and Hymen Chausow are credited with bringing Sedgebrook and Glenkirk together. At a meeting that addressed the topic of volunteerism, Hymen Chausow approached Brent Hall about getting Sedgebrook involved in Glenkirk’s work, and the rest is history. The initial point was a financial contribution and participation in a 2006 fundraiser, which has grown into a full-fledged partnership and mutual appreciation between the two organizations.

Glenkirk, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2004, provides high-quality lifetime support and services that empower individuals of all ages with developmental disabilities to participate fully in all areas of community life in Lake and Cook Counties. Glenkirk advocates for and provides support and services to these individuals based on the principles of informed choice, personal dignity, responsibility, and individualization, thereby enhancing the quality of life for each and every person who participates in these programs. Services are community-based, span the entire lifetime from infancy to old age, and are individually designed with the needs and interests of participants in mind. (Susan Kocanda)
