Day spas get newfound interest from older adults

Day spas are no longer perceived as a frivolous luxury reserved only for the elite. In fact, 57 million Americans visited a spa last year, according to the International Spa Association’s (ISPA) 2006 Spa-Goer Study.

A growing trend
Pampering yourself with spa treatments is a great way to look—and feel—your best. Taking the time for a relaxing massage or rejuvenating facial can reduce stress and contribute to your overall health and wellness.

More and more people are recognizing the physical and mental benefits of spending some quality time at a spa. When asked how they would spend $200 of discretionary income, 58% of ISPA’s survey respondents indicated that they would treat themselves to a spa visit.

For people who live at Sedgebrook in Lincolnshire, the chance to relax and unwind is just a short indoor walk from their homes. The on-site Cardinal Salon offers a full menu of treatments, from highlights to pedicures.

A full-service spa right at home
“The convenience is marvelous. It’s great to get out of bed and come right down,” says Flora Dierbach, who gets her hair done at the salon every month. “In the bad weather, it’s fantastic.”

Salon manager Lina Bernshteyn, a former Elizabeth Arden stylist, is on hand to maintain her clients’ favorite hair styles or update their look with new styles. She sees about 25 customers every week, including many regulars.

Bernshteyn and many of her customers have become friends over the conversations they’ve had while she styles their hair.
