Based on ten years of research on successful work environments, WorldBlu, a Washington D.C.-based leadership development foundation, conducted a comprehensive survey to identify the most democratic workplaces in the world. In March, the organization honored 34 companies that best embody the principles of democracy in the workplace.
Dynamic leader, democratic workplace
Sedgebrook in Lincolnshire is one of only two Illinois businesses that made WorldBlu’s list.
Executive Director Ian Brown is honored that Sedgebrook received the award, but he’s not surprised. The dynamic leader has a calm and thoughtful demeanor, and it’s not difficult to feel at ease in his presence.
Brown says that “communication and authenticity” are the keys to creating a positive work environment.
“A democratic workplace is one where people feel safe to express their ideas,” he says.
High morale infectious
The employees aren’t the only beneficiaries of a democratic workplace. When morale is high and employees feel their contributions are valued, people who live at Sedgebrook benefit as well.
“Sedgebrook’s leadership is all about empowerment and personal responsibility,” says Mike McCann, community resources manager.
No ordinary community
It doesn’t take long for residents or people considering a move to Sedgebrook to recognize that this is no ordinary community. Sedgebrook employees show up to work happy and energized. They know that they are not just putting in another day at the office. They are working to create a fulfilling lifestyle and environment for hundreds of people. And that difference is apparent to the residents they serve.
“People here are so friendly. They always say good morning,” says resident Doris Harkaway. “The staff is just outstanding.”
