Families, national media converge on Sedgebrook for intergenerational play day

Grandparents spend $30 billion per year on grandchildren and young relatives, and account for about 25% of all toy purchases, according to the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). However, those who don’t live with a grandchild every day may not immediately know the hottest new toys topping wish lists this holiday season— unless they’re one of the 250 people who live at Sedgebrook.

A toy shopping spree
“Because older adults have such enormous influence and purchase power, they need to be among the first to see the latest toys— and maybe even give them a test drive,” says Tracy Dellaria, the community’s retirement counselor.

Armed with $1,500 from Sedgebrook, residents Bill Leroy, Harriet Wolfe, and Flora Dierbach went on a toy shopping spree at the KB Toys in Chicago Ridge Mall. Their mission: to scour the shelves for the most exciting and in-demand holiday toys, and bring them back to the community.

A play day for all ages
On Sunday, December 10, the trio presented their purchases at an intergenerational toy play day at Sedgebrook. The day drew a huge crowd of community members, their families, eager grandchildren, and even national media who filmed the event.

Toy stations featuring electronics, outdoor equipment, classic toys, and more were set up around campus. Families had an opportunity to play together and test out all of the latest items. Santa and Mrs. Claus even dropped by to join in the fun and hear a few holiday wishes.

After the festivities, Sedgebrook donated the entire $1,500 spent on toys to Glenkirk, a North Shore non-profit organization that helps special needs children and adults become part of the Illinois workforce.
