‘My Patients Deserve Better Care’

“Erickson HealthSM has the fundamental principles that drove me to medicine,” says Dr. Elliott Kroger, full-time physician at Sedgebrook.

In his previous practice, Kroger says that too much time spent “fighting insurance and filling out paperwork” kept him from devoting all the attention he wished to his patients.

Now, with a small and exclusive group of patients and a nationwide network of medical experts behind him, Kroger says he’s doing more of the work that inspired him to pursue medicine in the first place.

A Prestigious Practice
Kroger didn’t always dream of becoming a doctor. In fact, he was an aspiring novelist and chef until college, when he says the medical field drew him in. “I wanted to do something important. I wanted to make a difference in the world, and I felt like I would be able to do that as a doctor.”

Since earning his M.D. from Rush Medical College in 1978, Kroger has been making a difference and making waves in the Chicagoland medical community. He has practiced and taught medicine, served on prestigious boards, and received numerous awards, including recognition in Chicago Magazine’s “Best Doctors” edition.

Expertise in Geriatric Medicine
Still, Kroger says his real passion has always been patient care. A general internist for 24 years, he devoted the last 15 to geriatric medicine. “I take care of a variety of medical concerns, including diabetes, hypertension, and arthritis.”

When he learned about Erickson HealthSM at Sedgebrook, Kroger saw an opportunity to devote more time and attention to patients.

“I made the switch to Sedgebrook because it provided an opportunity to practice quality medicine with an emphasis on wellness and prevention.” He was particularly impressed by Erickson HealthSM, the nation’s largest integrated health care system for older adults—available only at Erickson communities like Sedgebrook.

“I felt like I wanted to be a part of that,” he says.

Same-Day Appointments
Under Erickson HealthSM, patients have access to benefits like a state-of-the-art electronic medical records system not yet available in most medical practices—not to mention Medicare peace of mind. Dr. Kroger and the Sedgebrook Medical Center will always accept Medicare.

Having a doctor in the house is a relief for the people who live at Sedgebrook, even the handful of residents who decided to stay with their outside primary care physician and use the Medical Center as needed.

Since Kroger sees significantly fewer patients than the average doctor, he can schedule same-day appointments. That means Sedgebrook residents can take care of small symptoms before they grow into large concerns.

Making Time for Family
Medical assistant Jacqueline Daube Cooper works with Kroger at Sedgebrook’s Medical Center. Not only is he an expert in his field, he genuinely cares about his patients as well as his colleagues, she says. “He’s very easy to work with.”

When he’s not in the Medical Center, Kroger can usually be found playing a game of baseball or biking with his son near their home in Vernon Hills. While he says that medicine is his passion, he has not completely given up on his dreams of being a chef. Kroger loves to cook and try out new recipes at home.
