Part One in an Exclusive Three-Part Interview With the Founder and CEO of Erickson Retirement Communities

By Regina Harris
THE ERICKSON TRIBUNE

John Erickson, founder and CEO of Erickson Communities, sat down with the Tribune for an exclusive three-part interview series. This month, Erickson reveals the inspiration behind his enormously successful communities and the two universal comments he hears from residents nationwide.

Tribune: What inspired you to build your first Erickson community?

Erickson: Many years ago I happened to be on a business trip to Washington D.C., when someone mentioned to me that St. Charles Seminary near Baltimore was abandoned. As a former seminarian, my ears perked up. I hated to see such a beautiful place sitting empty. Instead of catching my plane, I decided to drive up to Baltimore for a look. I saw the campus and the setting, and I had a vision for developing a better way for people to spend their retirement years.

After plenty of hard work and plenty more people telling us that a community of this scope just couldn’t be done, my team opened Charlestown in 1983. Now, I’m pleased to say, more than 17,500 people across America live in Erickson communities, including Sedgebrook.

Tribune: You say you have developed a better way for people to retire. What was lacking about the retirement options prior to Erickson?

Erickson: There were, and continue to be, misconceptions about aging, and I truly believe Erickson is changing the concept of aging in America. Today, life expectancy is way up there. When you turn 70, you can expect to live more than 20 years or so. And people want to make those quality years. I wanted to create a lifestyle that makes people stop and say “That’s the way I want to live!”

Tribune: How are you accomplishing that? What about the lifestyle at communities like Sedgebrook enhances retirement?

Erickson: Our job is to provide the very best services to support your retirement. We’ve created an environment that promotes well-being and health. There are so many things to be involved in, and when you’re engaged with other people socially and intellectually, you really are healthier.

When you’re living alone, your social structure can unwind so quickly and so naturally. You drop out of the bridge club, you don’t feel like driving at night. Socially, we can wind down without even noticing it. That’s not good for you.

People who live at Erickson communities have a great time. They’re socially engaged and they make a difference. Let me give you an example. At Charlestown, we had a waiter named Kevin—a great kid, a teenager still in school— who had some difficulty reading. Well, I just happened to mention this to Muriel, a retired schoolteacher living there. She took it upon herself to personally tutor Kevin. Because of her, Kevin went to a four-year college. Muriel didn’t stop there. She was inspired to organize an entire mentoring program at Charlestown.

Tribune: What sort of people live in Erickson communities? Who did you create these communities for?

Erickson: I greatly admire people who say, ‘I can always make life better.” Over the years, people tend to grow into one of two groups. Some people just stay in their house and hope nothing unpredicted happens. Others plan for the future and put some energy into planning for the future.

If you want to connect and be involved, you have to plan ahead. Don’t wait for people to have to make a decision for you. There are two universal comments I hear from people who live at Erickson communities across the country: ‘I didn’t do it soon enough’ and ‘It’s better than I could have ever imagined’.
