Sedgebrook’s two bedroom apartment homes are being snapped up fasterthan ever. Why? Many of  the people who call Sedgebrook home will tellyou that having a guest room makes all the difference—even if it isn’t used for guests.

These people have found clever, beautiful, and unique uses for their guest rooms.

Take a peek inside their homes to see for yourself.

Room for a Favorite Pasttime

A brief tour of Sedgebrook’s two bedroom designs starts at the home of Muriel Sherman of Lake Forest. Muriel has found a unique use for the guest room in her Fairmont—she uses it as a knitting room! A life-long knitting enthusiast and the founder of Sedgebrook’s knitting club, Muriel needed some extra space to pursue her passion— and to store all of her yarn, patterns, and projects.

“This is perfect for me,” she says, sliding open the doors of the large closet to show off some additional custom storage space. “I have all of my knitting books and extra yarn.”

That extra space was vital to Muriel, who says she doesn’t like the look or the feel of clutter. Her knitting room is as neat and orderly as it is warm and inviting. A colorful area rug lies across the hardwood floor and a wooden rack on the wall organizes the yarn for her current projects.

Muriel says she knew the Fairmont was for her the moment she saw it. “I have the perfect space for myself.”

Room for Reading

A short elevator ride up from Muriel is Doris Harkaway’s Hastings. With a desk, entertainment  center, bookcase, and sofa, Doris’ guest room serves alternately as a den, media room, and reading room.

“I’m a reader. I love books,” says Doris, indicatingthe packed bookcase. “That’s why I like this room, because the space is just perfect for my bookcase.”

Doris’ books aren’t the only thing special about this room. Exquisite equestrian prints and a multitude of racing memorabilia decorate the walls. The memorabilia has sentimental value, explains Doris, whose father worked for millionaire stable-owner William Woodward. In the 1930’s, Woodward owned twoTriple Crown winning horses, including the legendary Gallant Fox.

The equestrian theme combined with Doris’ books give the room the comfortable feel of an English study. Whenever Doris wants some quiet time to read and relax, this room is where she heads.

Room to Entertain

Just a few doors down lives Mary Bazell of Vernon Hills. When moving into her Patterson, Mary found herself in a conundrum. A gracious hostess who loves to entertain, Mary wanted her out-of-town guests to be able to stay the night—comfortably. But she also wanted a home office where she could keep track of her finances and enjoy a little quiet time.

Her solution? The sofa in Mary’s guest room pulls out into a sleeper bed for overnight guests. When her guests are gone, it folds back up so that Mary has more space for herself. “I’ve used the guest room twice to have people over here, and it was very comfortable,” she says.

Space was vital to Mary, who moved from a large house. Over the winter holidays, she had sixteen people for dinner in her Patterson. “I love the openness of the design,” she says. “It gives you the space.”

Not Just for Guests

Guest rooms aren’t just for guests anymore. Theseare just some of the ways people who live at Sedgebrook are turning their guest rooms into cozy, functional, and distinctive spaces—just for themselves. What will you do with your extra room?
