“There’s a lot going on here,” says Lorraine Rothermel of Buffalo Grove. “Everyone I talk to is interested in doing something, whether it be playing bridge or starting a club. It’s a lot of fun.”
Since last June, the number of resident-run clubs and organizations has exploded. Clubs at Sedgebrook are differentfrom those at other retirement communities.
Community Resource Manger Mike McCann explains, “At Sedgebrook, we don’t tell you what clubs you can or can’t have. Our residents start and run their own clubs and organizations. You can participate as much or as little as you like.”
As a result, there’s a club for just about every interest—from choir to computers, book club to bridge. “If you don’t see a club that meets your interests,” says Mike, “Go ahead and start one yourself.”
As Sedgebrook continues to grow and more and more people move in, the list of clubs and organizations keeps growing longer.
A Year of Growth
Sedgebrook has grown in population as well as size. “There are new people moving in every day,” says Dee Keller of Arlington Heights.
Once upon a time, there were just a handful of Priority List members waiting for Sedgebrook to open. Now, that number has exploded to nearly 150 residents and almost 400 Priority List members.
While Tracy is excited to see how much Sedgebrook has grown, she says she’s also a little worried that everyone who wants to reserve at Sedgebrook may not have an opportunity.
“Sedgebrook is now 90 percent reserved. Many apartment designs have sold out and waiting lists are already forming for others,” she says.
With 400 people on the Priority List, 2,000 more who have requested information in the past three months alone, and only 200 apartment homes under construction, Tracy fears that demand for Sedgebrook could soon exceed supply.
Don’t Let Another Year Go By
Tracy worries that those who wait to reserve could miss out entirely.
“A lot of people ask me, ‘How big is Sedgebrook going to grow?’ Well, the truth is, we don’t know. Of course we hope to grow into the expansive community you may have seen in drawings. But because Erickson is a financially conservative organization, and because building costs rise every year, there are two things I just don’t know: when we will build more, or how much it will cost you.
“If you keep waiting for new buildings, you may be waiting a good long time. You may also end up paying much more. Historically, the cost of the entrance deposit has gone up every year at every Erickson campus since 1983.” According to Tracy, one thing is for certain. You will get the best deal now.
“Our campus is becoming more valuable every day. Just look how much has happened in just one year.”
