Five Things Sedgebrook Residents Can Do Now that They Couldn’t Do in Their Houses

Why Many Say They’re Healthier, Happier, and Having More Fun than Ever Before

Is there anything you can do at Sedgebrook that you couldn’t do in your house? The Tribune posed this question to dozens of Sedgebrook residents. Their answers may surprise you...

1. Eat Dessert!

“Sedgebrook does the cooking for me!” says Ginger Kotz, who moved from Chicago. Although she considers herself a pretty good cook, Ginger says that preparing a whole meal in her house felt like a chore.

Now, when she wants to, she lets Sedgebrook do the cooking—and the cleaning. The Monarch Café is a friendly and casual place to grab lunch or breakfast, while Sedgebrook’s Shoreline restaurant serves up delicious dinners in a more traditional atmosphere.

“I never made dessert in my house,” confesses Ginger. “And now I’m enjoying my dessert.”

2. Meet New People

But a great meal isn’t just about the food—it’s the company! According to Lorraine Rothermel from Buffalo Grove, the Shoreline restaurant is the best place to meet and greet.

“At dinner, you meet everyone,” she says. “You can sit with different people every night and get acquainted.”

Even though Lorraine had good friends in her old neighborhood, she just wasn’t meeting new people. She wasn’t as busy as she would have liked to be. “When I moved to Sedgebrook, I just met so many wonderful people, and I don’t have a minute on my calendar that isn’t used up.”

Lorraine admits she was initially worried it might be difficult to meet people. Her fears were unfounded—although she offers this piece of advice to anyone with similar worries. “Join committees, clubs, or exercise class. I play bridge and mahjong, and swim occasionally. I use the exercise room and often as I can, and you meet people. If you’re active at all, you’ll meet people.”

3. Do What You Want to Do

“I just don’t know how anyone could prefer living in a great big house with a lot of unused rooms that you have to clean,” says Muriel Sherman from Lake Forest. According to Muriel, her two-bedroom Fremont is the perfect size for her.

Without the hassles of maintaining a house, Muriel is free to do more of the things she wants to do. “I enjoy the swimming pool, I take aerobics classes, and I use the machines at the Fitness Center.” In addition, Muriel has started the Sedgebrook knitting club. The group is currently knitting blankets and sweaters for underprivileged children in the Chicago area.

Muriel believes her life has changed since she moved to Sedgebrook. “I’ve got more friends, I’m happier, and I just love being here.”

4. Have Fun Keeping Fit

Keeping fit may not sound like everyone’s idea of fun. But when your home includes a state-of-the-art Fitness Center and an all-season swimming pool, you may start singing a different tune.

Instead of driving to an expensive health club, just take a walk down Sedgebrook’s climate-controlled walkways and hop on your favorite exercise machine, or dive into an invigorating water aerobics class. A personal trainer can even work with you to develop an individual fitness regime.

“Unlike living alone in a house, the lifestyle here includes physical activity,” says Sedgebrook’s Wellness Coordinator, Kelly Morris. “And the mentality is to focus on what people are able to do and build on that, rather than focus on what they can’t do.”

Fred Tolzien from Morton Grove will vouch for that. He didn’t belong to a health club before moving to Sedgebrook. In fact, he didn’t think he could enjoy a regular fitness regime due to his arthritis.

However, since moving to Sedgebrook with wife Doris, Fred has been a regular at the Fitness Center. He feels a noticeable change. “My arthritis is much better.”

Had he stayed in his house, Fred believes that he would not feel as healthy as he does now.

5. Let Someone Else Drive

Gene McCaffrey, who moved from Vernon Hills, no longer has to rely on friends and family for a lift around town. The Sedgebrook shuttle picks him up at his door.

The Sedgebrook shuttle will pick you up at the Cardinal Clubhouse and chauffer you to local supermarkets, stores, and places of worship. You can even reserve the shuttle to drop you off and pick you up at the airport. Won’t it be a relief to relax and let someone else do the driving, especially in bad weather?

Sedgebrook offers valuable amenities and services that a house just can’t provide—so that you’re free to do more of the things you want.
