Tips on Limbering Up

Posted on Friday, September 01, 2006

Flexibility is one of the most important aspects of fitness. Flexibility is attained through stretching exercises that promote joint range of motion and aid in the prevention of future injury. A few important tips to remember before performing stretches are:

1.  Never stretch a cold muscle. Warm up exercises, such as walking for a short period of time, should be performed before stretching to prevent injury to the muscle. A warm muscle will stretch easier and is less likely to tear.

2.  Never perform stretches to the point of pain. A slight stretching sensation should be felt in the muscle.

3.  Never bounce when stretching. The quick motion puts the muscle at risk for tearing and injury.

4.  Aim to stretch large muscle groups daily. Hold each stretch three times for 15-30 seconds.
