THE ERICKSON TRIBUNE

In the first of a series of articles begun last month, we looked at how John Erickson’s 100% Refundable Entrance Fee changed the model for retirement communities and ushered in an innovative tradition at the Erickson organization. In this article, we explore how Erickson HealthSM continues this tradition, with measurable benefits for those who live at Erickson communities such as Seabrook.

Integrated Health and Wellness

“What sets the Erickson properties apart is their cornucopia of medical and wellness services,” says The Washington Post in an April 18, 2006, article. And while there are many other things that also set Erickson retirement communities apart, it is true that there is nothing like Erickson HealthSM anywhere in America.

Erickson HealthSM is the nation’s largest and most completely integrated health care and wellness system for older adults. Bringing together an extensive array of services, programs, and over 1,200 health and medical professionals, it currently serves over 17,000 people living at 18 Erickson communities.

Comprehensive Care System

At Seabrook, some of the benefits Erickson HealthSM offers:

• An on-campus Medical Center led by three fulltime doctors whose sole practice is at Seabrook and with regular office hours for specialists

• Personalized exercise programs in the Fitness Center

• Additional wellness programs in the pool and in classrooms

• Centricity—an advanced electronic medical records system providing Seabrook physicians instant access to residents’ health information for increased accuracy, better care coordination with outside doctors and hospitals, and rapid response in emergencies

• 24-hour on-site Emergency Medical Services

• Home Health Services when needed

• And also if needed, Short- Term Rehabilitation, Assisted Living, and Skilled Nursing Care in Seabrook’s Renaissance Gardens health care neighborhood.

Preventative Focus

It’s not just the breadth and magnitude of its services that distinguish Erickson HealthSM, however. It is also its focus on keeping people at their best.

Through personalized fitness regimens, nutritional consultation, wellness programs, and enhanced medical attention—the doctorpatient ratio at Erickson communities is five times smaller than the norm— Erickson HealthSM aims to prevent the kind of health problems that often occur when people live alone in their houses.

As a result, people living at Erickson communities are significantly less likely to need acute medical care. And only one in 13 ever needs long-term nursing care—compared to one in four nationally.

Of course, a full spectrum of health and medical services are there when needed. But the goal of this pioneering approach is to create a total “good health environment” that focuses on maintaining and enhancing people’s strengths, so they can function at the highest possible level.
