Barbara Chachko, the events coordinator for Seabrook, was recently appointed to the Board of Directors of the SCAN Learning Center, a nonprofit organization providing a wide range of educational opportunities for older adults in Monmouth and surrounding counties.

SCAN, which stands for Senior Citizens Activity Network, was founded in 1988 and is headquartered in Monmouth County. Its stated mission is “to enhance the quality of life of older adults by promoting, sponsoring, and coordinating educational programs that culturally,  physically, and intellectually promote lifelong learning.”

The SCAN mission statement supports numerous studies showing that active minds and bodies help keep older adults mentally and physically healthier and prolong their ability to remain independent.

“SCAN’s philosophy is right in line with Seabrook’s” says Barbara, who has worked at the community for six years. Seabrook has been a sponsor of SCAN for the last five years.

Satellite Campus

“When I came here in 2000, we were already supporting SCAN and I’m sure we were holding some classes here as well,” says Barbara. “That has since been expanded. This spring there are classes at Seabrook every day of the week except Monday.”

In recognition of its expanding role in accommodating a growing SCAN curriculum, Seabrook was recently designated the Satellite Campus of SCAN.

“Many people who live at Seabrook attend classes here,” says Barbara. “But anyone who belongs to SCAN can also enroll and take classes at Seabrook. By the same token, some of our residents attend classes at the SCAN Learning Center in the Monmouth Mall. And currently, one of our residents is teaching a class in drawing.”

To enroll in SCAN classes, it is necessary to be a SCAN member. All people aged 50-plus are eligible to be members, and those 45 to 49 can be associate members. Any member’s spouse regardless of age can also be an associate member. The initial membership fee is $15 for members and $30 for associate members, with annual renewals at $10 and $15 respectively. Once a person has joined, tuition for any class is either free or carries a nominal course fee.

SCAN currently has about 14,000 members. Of that number, about 10,000 live in Monmouth County, 2,100 are in Ocean County, and the remaining 1,900 reside in Bergen, Essex, Union, Middlesex, and Mercer Counties. Over  250 SCAN members live at Seabrook.

Seabrook Seat

As a sponsor of SCAN, Seabrook has had a representative on the SCAN Board of Directors for several years. Barbara is taking over the seat that was previously held by Seabrook Community Resources Coordinator Susan Coulson, who joined Seabrook two years ago after serving as marketing director for the Monmouth Mall.

When Susan came to Seabrook, she was already on the SCAN Board of Directors through her association with Monmouth Mall. Susan stayed on as Seabrook’s representative, but recently her term expired.

“We at SCAN felt it was imperative to retain a Seabrook representative on our board,” says SCAN Executive Director Pat Barlow. "We’ve had a close working relationship with Seabrook, and they know the senior community very well. Although we’ll miss Susan, the SCAN Board of Directors and I were thrilled when she recommended Barbara. We look forward to working with her throughout her upcoming term."

Looking Ahead

Before joining the Seabrook marketing department as the event coordinator, Barbara worked for a trade show company and was a sales representative for leading international chocolate companies. A resident of Oceanport, N.J., she is married and the mother of three teenagers, one in college.

With her strong marketing background, Barbara says she wants to focus on promoting all the enriching opportunities that are available through SCAN.

“It’s a great way for people to stay active,” She says, “Whether it’s exercise classes, literature, art, music, or photography, there’s just a plethora of activities for people to get involved with.”
