No, Seabrook doesn’t have a Polar Bears Club. But it does have an allseason Aquatics Center that people use every day of the year.

There, under a soaring glass ceiling, they can splash, do water aerobics, or swim laps in the 50- by 20- foot pool, which is heated to a comfortable 83 to 86 degrees. Or they can relax in the hot tub spa.

Meanwhile, it could be snowing just a few feet away.

A Year-Round Favorite

The Aquatics Center is located in Seabrook’s Village Center Clubhouse and looks out on the clubhouse courtyard. For now, people are content to enjoy the scenery behind doubleinsulated sliding glass door walls.

Once the weather gets warm, however, the doors of this solarium-like area will open to gentle breezes and a beautiful, veranda-style patio that surrounds the Aquatics Center. Barbecues and parties just outside the Center are regular events in the spring and summer.

Round-the-Clock Access

The Aquatic Center’s all-season swimming pool and spa are open virtually around the clock, excluding a few hours a week for maintenance. A certified lifeguard is on duty during specified hours, but residents may enjoy the pool at other times as long as they swim with a partner. Many say they enjoy the ability to bring visitors, especially during those off hours when the pool is not being used.

Guests and family members are welcome to use the pool and other amenities as long as they’re accompanied by a Seabrook resident. With depths that  range from three and a half feet to four and a half feet, the shallow pool is perfect for visiting grandchildren to enjoy.

Aquatic Exercise

The Aquatics Center adjoins the Seabrook Fitness Center and is also used by those who want to stay fit.

“One of the reasons I moved here was for the aquatics,” says Irene Merrick, who has lived at Seabrook since 1999. On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings she attends an hour-long aquatic exercise class.

“It’s really good exercise, and it’s not as strenuous as doing the weights in the Fitness Center, which I do the other two days that I’m not in the pool,” she says.

Seabrook Wellness Coordinator Kim Rinkerman says that aquatic exercise can be particularly beneficial to older adults. “It is amazing the cardiovascular and strength workout you can receive in the water,” she says. “The water creates less pounding on the joints and is better for arthritic conditions.”

A lot of people get their exercise on their own, by swimming laps. “I do almost a mile every day,” says Ed Braun who moved to Seabrook almost two years ago. “Five-sixths of a mile to be exact—44 laps. I figure I’ve swum more than 300 hundred miles in that pool since I’ve been here.”

Relaxing at the Spa

Perhaps what people find most luxurious is the all-season hot tub, with its soothing jets of gently massaging, 98-degree water. It’s ideal for soaking tired muscles or achy joints after a workout in the Fitness Center.
