THE ERICKSON TRIBUNE

As residents of New Orleans, the arrival of Hurricane Katrina in August 2005 motivated Earl and Claudia Davis to join an Erickson Priority List as soon as possible.

“We had wanted to move back to [the Washington, D.C.] area for a while,” says Earl. “Our daughter Cheryl and her husband Bob live in Alexandria, Va., and were instrumental in getting us interested in Erickson living.

We first visited Greenspring in 2001 and had been receiving The Erickson Tribune periodically ever since. “When a wild lady named ‘Katrina’ made a surprise visit to New Orleans, we boarded up and evacuated the day before she hit the area. After a few days in motels in Georgia, I took Claudia and our three cats to move in with Cheryl and Bob. That’s when we took a tour of Greenspring and signed up on the Priority List. It looked as though it would work out great, since I needed some time to go back to New Orleans, see what was left, fix it, and put our house on the market.”

Flexibility is key
One of the most advantageous benefits of joining the Priority List is the flexibility it gives people to transfer their “join date” to any of Erickson’s growing number of communities while still maintaining their place in line. After almost a year of waiting on the Greenspring Priority List for the apartment home they wanted, Earl and Claudia learned about Riderwood by watching the weekly infomercial about the community.

“We followed up online to find out more details,” says Earl. “We visited Riderwood for their luncheon and took a tour of the community. Sally Sager, our retire ment counselor, was very helpful, and we were impressed with the friendliness of both the residents and the staff. The buildings and grounds were neat, clean, and very pleasant. During that visit, we selected the floor plan that we liked and had our priority information transferred to Riderwood.”

A month later, the couple was able to get the floor plan they wanted and moved to Riderwood.

“I am sure that getting on the Priority List when we did really helped us get our choice,” says Earl. “In fact, we have told our children to think about getting on the list now so that they won’t have to worry about having a place to move to when they decide to retire. We also told a few of our friends about Riderwood.” The good thing about getting on the Priority List is that if you change your mind as to where you want to go, you can still have the same date. And the deposit is refundable if for some reason you can’t or don’t move in.”

Exciting new life
Since moving to Riderwood in October 2006, both Earl and Claudia have immersed themselves in community life. “We both said when we first moved in that we’d go slowly and not get too involved in too many things,” says Earl. Easier said than done.

“As a retired Marine, I started a Marine club, and Claudia started a Bunco club,” says Earl. “We are both on the Riderwood Welcoming Committee, assisting new residents as they get settled in. We are also members of the Riderwood ‘Rockets’ softball team that won the Erickson tournament this past July. We helped organize the [Nintendo] Wii bowling tournament, help at the weekly open bowling sessions, and participated in the Wii Home Run Derby. I am also involved with Riderwood TV and am having fun and learning a lot.”

Sage advice
For those interested in making a future move to Riderwood, the couple suggests first attending an informational luncheon. “It’s a great way of seeing the campus  and meeting the residents,” Earl says. “You can talk directly to the people who are going to be your neighbors and ask any questions that you may have.”

Looking forward to long, happy lives at Riderwood, the couple finds it difficult to decide what they like best about their new home. “The residents are high on the list,” says Earl. “There are some really great people here we never would have met anywhere else. The staff is friendly and very professional. There is help available 24/7 if we need it. There are no more maintenance worries, the grass cutting and snow removal are all taken care of, and the meals are great, with a choice of five restaurants and different menus at each one. Plus, we have the security of a gated community with 24/7 security patrols. Riderwood is just a great place to live.”
