Young at Heart, a pet rescue organization in Palatine, helps abandoned dogs and cats find new homes. The group brought some of its most adorable animals to Sedgebrook in April for a pet adoption event. Residents, staff, as well as families from nearby communities played with the pooches and cuddled the cats, and some even inquired about welcoming an animal into their home.

Mature pets ideal

Young at Heart primarily rescues adult dogs and cats, which can be harder to place in homes because many people want a puppy or kitten. But older animals can make a great addition to a loving household, the organization says. They are typically housebroken, have outgrown chewing and scratching, and they tend to be calmer and learn more quickly.

Arlene Burkhardt, a Young at Heart board member, says mature pets are ideal companions for older adults, who would like an animal around the house, but don’t necessarily want the hassle of training a puppy or kitten. “We think it’s a really good combination,” she says. If you are interested in adopting a pet or volunteering with Young at Heart, call (847) 529-2025 or visit www.yahpetrescue.com.
