The Doctor Is In

Hypertension or high blood pressure (HBP) affects 1 out of every 4 people in the U.S., and can increase the risk for a number of dangerous cardiovascular diseases, such as heart failure, coronary artery disease, and even stroke. Fortunately, there are ways to manage HBP, including prescription drugs as well as “alternative” methods.

Lifestyle changes go a long way
Diet and lifestyle changes are the major recommendations for controlling HBP. Reducing sodium and fat, and increasing your daily intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, grains, and lowfat dairy may help lower your blood pressure. Likewise, many doctors agree that regular physical activity for 30 minutes daily can go a long way in bringing down hypertension. Don’t worry though. Those 30 minutes don’t necessarily need to be spent working up a sweat in the gym. Spend them doing anything you enjoy, like gardening, swimming, or a brisk walk.

Simple ways to reduce stress
Aside from diet and exercise, one of the healthiest lifestyle changes you can make is to reduce stress. Stress calls forth an old “fight or flight” response in which our blood pressure rises. While reducing your stress may sound much easier said than done, there are several easy, everyday things you can do to keep your stress at a healthy level. Exercise can allow you to work off that extra stress, so can repetition. Certain physical activities like yoga and tai chi create relaxation through repetition, and also foster a sense of control and well-being. Is medication the solution?

Numerous prescription medications are also available to help you manage hypertension and HBP. Speak with your doctor and decide on a course of treatment together. Be sure to communicate frequently with your doctor so that together you can monitor your progress. Here’s to your good health,
