Ginger Kotz Uses Color, Texture, and Even Scent to Give Her Hastings Individual Flair and Inviting Atmosphere

“I knew this apartment home was for me because it fit everything that I wanted it to fit,” says Ginger Kotz of her Hastings—including her enormous grandfather clock.

Before moving to Sedgebrook, Monarch Landing’s sister community already open in Lincolnshire, Ginger spent more time than she wanted maintaining her 50 year-old house in Chicago.

“I loved my house,” she says. But like many homeowners, Ginger was growing frustrated with the small, closed-off rooms, narrow hallways, and a kitchen that just wasn’t convenient for entertaining. “The kitchen here is bigger, and it makes a difference. There’s more cabinet space.”

Space for Company—and Privacy

Having that extra space is important to Ginger, who describes herself as a social person who loves to entertain. She uses her guest room as a private den and TV room, and reserves her living room for company.

“The den is kind of messy,” she admits, indicating a stack of papers and a scattering of books. “But I  want the major part of my home to look nice—the part that company sees. The part I don’t want them to see, I just close the door.”

An Eye (and Nose) for Design

A graduate of the Harrington Institute of Interior Design on Michigan Avenue, Ginger knows a thing or two about designing a warm and welcoming home. Earth-toned walls compliment rich, dark wood and a large curio cabinet she recently purchased to showcase her most treasured mementos.

Her dining room table is the perfect size for a circle of friends and opens up to accommodate a larger party.

Ginger understands that creating a distinctive space involves all five senses. From window treatments to accent pillows, she combines complimentary textures to create a stylish, yet comfortable atmosphere. The inviting scent of a vanilla candle greets her guests at the door and instantly puts them at ease.

A Hastings Secret Revealed

For those with larger pieces of furniture, or framed art, the Hastings has one particular advantage over larger apartment homes. “Some of the bigger homes have smaller walls because of their layout,” Ginger explains.

As for the layout of the Hastings, Gingers says that it could have been designed for her. “This is the perfect space for me.”
