Reservists Refuse to Wait Until Grand Opening to Start Book Club, Card Club

Two New Clubs Introduced at Monarch Landing—Ahead of Schedule

By Melissa Borgerding

Monarch Landing’s almost 200 reservists and Priority List members weren’t about to wait until the community’s Grand Opening this summer to start making great friends and sharing their common interests. They demanded that a resident life director be hired immediately. And rather than wait until summer, they insisted that clubs and activities start now.

That’s just what they got.

Tremendous Demand for More Clubs

Two new clubs are already in full swing at Monarch Landing, and dozens more are on the way when the community opens this summer.

“We’re not even open yet, and already a strong sense of community exists here,” says Linda Wylder, Monarch Landing’s first-ever Director of Resident Life. Previously, Linda worked at Sedgebrook, Monarch Landing’s sister community in Lincolnshire. The demand for clubs and organizations brought Linda to Monarch Landing full-time.

According to Linda, reservists wanted two clubs in particular—a book club and a card club. Currently, both the Monarch Landing book club and Card-a-rama meet once a month at the Welcome Center.

“We’ve had tremendous response to both of these clubs,” says Linda. “Reservists are so excited to meet and to socialize with new people who share their interests. Everyone is having a wonderful time.”

A Thriving Social Scene

Card-a-rama offers a sampling of various fun and challenging card games. From bridge to pinochle, poker to gin rummy—everyone is sure to find something they like. All skill levels are welcome and encouraged.

However, the newly-formed book club is drawing the biggest crowd. Kathy Carrus from the famous Anderson’s Bookstore in Naperville facilitated each monthly discussion. Kathy, who has been featured on C-SPAN Book TV is a professional book discussion facilitator and also facilitates several book groups at the Naperville Public Library.

Some of the upcoming selections for the Monarch Landing book club will include “The Sweet Hereafter” by Russell Banks, “The Secret Life of Bees” by Sue Monk Kidd, and “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time” by Mark Haddon.

Linda cautions that meeting dates for both clubs are subject to change, and RSVPs are required. Call the Welcome Center to find out more information on the book club or Card-a-rama, as well as the many other fun activities planned at Monarch Landing.

“Besides engaging in a great discussion or a little friendly competition, you’ll be getting to know your new neighbors,” says Linda. “Who knows, you may even meet your next best friend.”
